Weimer, Koca Lead Mavs to Another Sweep
Apr 15, 2008 | Baseball
Chris Weimer and Dustin Koca combined to drive in 13 runs as the University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team extended its win streak to 14 with a nonconference sweep of Fort Hays State, 10-7 and 11-5, Tuesday afternoon at Boys Town.
With winds gusting to more than 40 mph out to left field, the Mavericks (26-9) hit six home runs on the day, with Weimer and Koca each hitting two. In the first game, Koca socked a three-run homer in the second inning. Evan Porter followed with a solo shot, boosting the Mavs to a quick 6-0 lead. Weimer clubbed a three-run homer of his own in the fourth to extend the lead to 9-1.
But a three-run knock by Fort Hays' Ryan Majercik highlighted a five-run fifth that brought the Tigers (17-21) within three runs, at 9-6. A run-scoring single by Weimer in the bottom of the inning made it 10-6. Majercik went deep again in the sixth for the final scoring. Brandon Dahl (2-0) earned the win, going two and two-thirds out of the bullpen, allowing one run on two hits.
The second game also started with a bang, as Bryan Frew and Weimer started the game with back-to-back home runs. It was Frew's seventh of the year and Weimer's 14th, already the fourth-highest single-season total in UNO history. He is only four away from tying the record, which he set last year.
The Tigers scored three runs, two unearned, to take a brief 3-2 lead. But Koca's second homer of the day, his seventh of the year, to dead center field in the bottom of the inning, tied the game. The Mavs blew it open in the fourth scoring five runs, highlighted by a two-run triple by Jeremy Klein and a two-run double by Koca.
Matt DeGagne threw four and two-thirds to earn the win, allowing four runs, two earned, on just three hits.
The Mavericks return to action Saturday with a North Central Conference doubleheader against Augustana, starting at 1 p.m.
