Koca, Porter Lead Mavericks to Sweep of Fort Hays

HAYS, Kan.- The University of Nebraska at Omaha used solid pitching and timely hitting to sweep future MIAA opponent Fort Hays State, 5-4 and 3-2 Wednesday. Dustin Koca and Even Porter each delivered big hits in each end of the twin bill while Matt DeGagne and Wes Simmons delivered on the mound.
UNO, now 32-10, will next resume North Central Conference play at St. Cloud State this weekend. Fort Hays State fell to 21-24 after dropping the four-game season series to the Mavericks.
In game one Weimer broke a tie with a run-scoring triple to score Bryan Frew with two outs in the fifth inning. Mat Eikmeier was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the sixth inning that helped keep the Mavs in the lead. Koca's double in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the winning run.
Starter DeGagne went 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs with four strikeouts before handing the ball to Blake Denoyer who recorded thel ast two outs for the save.
In the nightcap the Mavericks again jumped out to an early lead before holding on for the win. UNO again received good starting pitching when Simmons threw five innings of four-hit ball, allowing one run with six strikeouts. Chris Kessinger threw one inning before Brandon Dahl earned his third save.
Porter singled home Chris Weimer, who tripled in the first. Travis Jacobi belted a solo homer, his 2nd of the year, in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and Porter gave the Mavericks a 3-1 lead with a solo homer in the sixth.
