Mavs Split Twin Bill With Wayne State College

WAYNE, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team split a doubleheader with Wayne State College Wednesday, dropping the first game, 4-3 after a 10-inning battle before coming back to win the second game 2-1.
The Mavericks (38-9, NCC 9-2), ranked No. 5 in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll and No. 1 in the region, will travel to Mankato, Minn. this weekend to play in the Minnesota State Tournament, beginning with a tripleheader Saturday, with games against Northwest Missouri State at 9 a.m., Concordia-St. Paul at 11 a.m. and Central Missouri at 5 p.m.
The Mavs will continue tournament play with a doubleheader Sunday, when they will play Mary at 9 a.m. and Winona State at 1 p.m.
In the first game, Jenifer McDowell's fourth inning two-run blast forged a 3-3 tie that lasted until WSC's Sam Earleywine hit a game-winning double in the bottom of the 10th.
Beth Haley gave a strong performance, but was tagged with her second consecutive loss, scattering six hits across 9.1 innings.
The Mavs jumped out to an early lead in game two when Leslie Svoboda homered down the left field line. Lindsey Slocum scored the only additional Mav run after capitalizing on a Wildcat miscue.
Melisa Negrete improved to 12-3, allowing only two hits in seven complete innings.
