Mavericks Open NCC Play With Two Wins

OMAHA, Neb.- The University of Nebraska at Omaha appeared to be in total control Saturday afternoon, sweeping a North Central Conference doubleheader from the University of North Dakota 14-2 and 5-1 at the Ballpark at BoysTown.
Chris Kessinger and Dustin Koca pitched back to back complete for the Mavs (16-9, 2-0) against the Fighting Sioux (7-7, 0-2), allowing a combined three runs.
The four-game series concludes Sunday, Apr. 6, with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
In game one Kessinger (5-1) allowed two runs on just three hits, and struck out six to collect the win.
Brian Strawn paced a 14 hit attack for UNO going 3-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in three with a home run. Chris Weimer and Koca also hit home runs in the first game against the Sioux.
Game two was much the same as the first, Koca (2-2) shut down UND's offense, surrendering only one run on three hits, while striking out four batters.
Evan Porter towering home run to straight-awary center field got things started for the Mavs in the nightcap.
The Mavericks were able to take advantage of a few UND miscues and pull away in the bottom of the fifth inning when UND starter Brandon Baumgartner hit two Mavericks and walked three others. Mat Eikmeier posted UNO's only hit of the inning, a two-run single, and pushed the score to 5-1.
