Mavericks Are Division II Free Throw Leaders

The University of Nebraska at Omaha led NCAA Division II men's basketball teams in free throw shooting and finished in the top 10 in three other statistical categories.
The Mavericks, who set a school record with 25 victories, shot 79.7 percent from the free throw line this year, hitting 593 of 744 attempts. Northwest Nazerene was second at 78.4 percent and Wisconsin-Parkside third at 78 percent.
UNO had eight players who shot over 75 percent from the stripe, including five who shot better than 80 percent. Mitch Albers, who connected on 63 of 75 attempts, led the team with 84.0 percent. Leading scorer Michael Jenkins was next at 83.1 percent, hitting 177 of 213 shots.
The Mavericks also ranked No. 8 in fewest turnovers, averaging 12.3 per game. National champion Winona State, which ended UNO's season in the second round of the NCAA II tournament, led Division II with 10.0 per game. UNO also was ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.35 per game. Winona State's 1.66 led.
UNO was 10th in scoring, averaging 84.8 points per game. The leader was West Liberty State, which averaged 97.5 points per game.
The Mavericks' 25-7 record under head coach Derrin Hansen was the second-best winning percentage in the past 76 years at UNO at .781. Since the 1931-32 team, which was 20-0, the best was the 23-6 team of 2004-05 which had a mark of .793.
