Weimer, Koca Named 1st Team All-Americans

Four different Mavericks, including two first team selections, earned All-American honors on Wednesday according to two separate organizations.
Senior outfielder Chris Weimer was named to the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America, first team. Senior utility player Dustin Koca, who split time as a pitcher and as a right fielder, earned first team Daktronics All-America accolades. In addition, junior short stop Evan Porter and junior pitcher Chris Kessinger were named to the Daktronics All-America third team.
Weimer, a second team Daktronics All-America selection in 2007, led the Mavericks with 23 home runs, 77 RBIs, 79 runs scored, and 92 hits, all school records. He also led UNO with a .405 batting average and an .837 slugging percentage. A two-time all-NCC and first team all-Central Region honoree, Weimer finished his career as the school's all-time leader in career home runs (41) and slugging percentage (.785), while finishing second in batting average (.391).
Koca led the nation in walks and set a school record with 60 base on balls, while batting .365 with 14 home runs and 61 RBIs. Koca, who also earned all-NCC and first team all-Central Region honors, was 5-2 on the mound with 58 strikeouts and a 4.61 ERA.
Porter, a two-time all-NCC honoree, was second on the Maverick squad with a .385 batting average, 15 home runs, and 76 RBIs. He led the Mavericks with 17 doubles. His 76 RBIs ranks second behind Weimer on the UNO single-season charts.
Kessinger, the 2008 NCC Pitcher of the Year, led Nebraska-Omaha with an 11-1 record and a 2.58 ERA. He was second on the squad with 88 strikeouts. His 11 wins tied the school record for most victories in a season, originally set in 1962 by Barry Miller, who finished 11-0.
Notes: Both Kessinger and Weimer earned all-tournament team honors at the NCAA II Central Regional, where UNO finished second to Central Missouri. The Mavericks finished the season with a 45-13 overall record, winning both the North Central Conference regular season and tournament titles, while advancing to the NCAA II Tournament for the fourth-straight season.
