Weimer, Koca Power Mavs Into NCC Title Game

OMAHA, Neb- Chris Weimer broke UNO's all-time career home runs record in dramatic fashion Friday, belting a three-run bomb in the top of the ninth inning to lift the University of Nebraska at Omaha past Minnesota State, Mankato 11-10 and into the championship game of the North Central Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (41-11) will play the winner of Minnesota State, Mankato - St. Cloud State match up, which has been moved up to 9 a.m. due to potential weather concerns over the weekend. The championship game is set to begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Both games are being played at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
UNO wasted little time against MSU, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first before MSU was even able to record the first out of the game. Dustin Koca powered the early outburst, hitting his first of two home runs on the day, a three-run shot over the left field fence.
MSU would bounce right back, scoring eight of the next nine runs to take a commanding 8-4 lead after four innings.
Koca, like he had in the first inning, got things going for UNO again in the seventh. His lead-off home run ignited a big three-run inning that cut MSU's lead down to 8-7, while his RBI single in the eighth knotted things up at 8-all.
Travis Jacobi's infield single and Bryan Frew's walk sparked a late two-out rally in the ninth that was highlighted by Weimer's record-breaking bomb to right center just one batter later.
UNO took an 11-8 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, and after a rocky start to the frame, were able to hold off MSU's last ditch efforts for the 11-10 victory.
Matt DeGagne (4-1) pitched four effective innings of relief, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out six to pick up the win, while Brain Strawn, who came on in the ninth, got credit for save.
