UNO Opens Season By Hosting 9-Team Tournament

The University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks will open the 2008 volleyball season this Friday-Saturday, Aug. 29-30, when they host the nine-team Comfort Inn & Suites/Firewater Grille Tournament in the Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks will open the tournament on Friday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. contest against Minnesota-Crookston. UNO will conclude Friday's play with a 7 p.m. match against Northern Michigan. The Mavericks will face Mary at 2 p.m. Saturday before wrapping up the tournament with a 6:30 p.m. match against Rockhurst.
The Record
The Mavericks finished the 2007 season with a 17-9 record, advancing to the NCAA II Tournament for a fourth-straight season and the ninth time in the Rose Shires' era. UNO finished in second place in the final North Central Conference standings with a 8-4 league record. Three starters and eight letterwinners return for the 2008 season as the Mavericks will have to replace last year's three departing seniors.
The Rankings
In the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 preseason poll released on Aug. 19, Nebraska-Omaha received votes. Five MIAA opponents were ranked in the top 20, including Washburn (No. 2), Truman State (No. 3), Emporia State (No. 11), Central Missouri (No. 13), and Pittsburg State (No. 17).
