
Maverick Women Host Two at Sapp This Week

This Week: The UNO women's basketball team returns home for back-to-back games at Sapp Fieldhouse this week. The Mavericks will host the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m. They'll finish the week against the Missouri Southern State University Lions on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 5 p.m.
The Records: The Mavericks are 6-6 this season and 3-4 in the MIAA. They're coming off a 66-62 loss at Central Missouri last Saturday, Jan. 10. Southwest Baptist is 6-8 on the season and also 3-4 in the league. The Bearcats picked up a 65-63 win over Fort Hays State on Jan. 10. Missouri Southern is 11-4 on the year and 5-3 in the MIAA. The Lions earned a 62-54 win against Fort Hayes State on Monday, Jan. 12.
The Coaches: Patty Patton Shearer is in her fifth season at UNO. She is 73-55 all time at UNO. Last year, the Mavericks started 14-1 (the best start in school history) and recorded their third-straight winning season at 17-12. A native of Marana, Ariz., Patton Shearer is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. J.C. Carter is in his first season behind the bench for the Bearcats. The 2003 graduate of Southwest Baptist was formerly an assistant for the SBU men's team. Maryann Mitts is in her eighth season at the helm of the Missouri Southern program. She is 127-85 all-time in Joplin, Mo. and 210-142 all-time in more than 11 years. She is a 1992 graduate of Rockhurst University.
The Series: UNO trails the all-time series with Southwest Baptist, 2-1. The two teams last played on Dec. 5, 1998 when the Bearcats earned a 92-74 win at home. This will be the first ever meeting between UNO and Missouri Southern in women's basketball.
Media: Both games can be heard live on KOIL 1180 AM in Omaha. David Gustafson will call all the play-by-play beginning with the pre-game show 10 minutes before the opening tip. The game also is available on-line at omavs.com. Both games may be viewed on-line at themiaa.tv.
Coming Up: The Mavericks will be back on the road next week when they battle the Pittsburg State University Gorillas on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 5:30 p.m. The Mavs will finish the week back at home on Saturday, Jan. 24 when they host the Washburn University Lady Blues at 1:30 p.m.
