Maverick Men Host Two Ranked Opponents

This Week: The University of Nebraska at Omaha men's basketball team will play back-to-back home games for the first time this season when it hosts the second-ranked Southwest Baptist University Bearcats on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and the twelfth-ranked Missouri Southern State University Lions on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
The Records: The Mavericks are 10-4 this season and 4-3 in the MIAA. UNO dropped an 85-72 decision at Central Missouri on Saturday, Jan. 10. The Bearcats are 13-1 on the season and 6-1 in the MIAA. They're coming off an 84-64 triumph over Fort Hays State last Saturday. The Lions are 15-3 this season and 5-3 in league play. They were upended by Fort Hays State, 67-59, on Monday, Jan. 12 at home.
The Coaches: Derrin Hansen is in his fourth season as UNO head coach. The 1991 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University is 62-43 as a head coach. He spent seven years at UNO as an assistant coach before taking over the head job in 2005. Jeff Guiot is in his fifth season leading Southwest Baptist. The Pittsburg State graduate is 94-39 in Bolivar, Mo. and 304-132 in more than 14 seasons as a head coach. Robert Corn is now in his 20th season as head coach of Missouri Southern. He is 305-251 all-time and is the winningest coach at his alma mater ('78).
The Series: The Mavericks are playing Southwest Baptist for the first time ever on Wednesday night. UNO doesn't have much history with Southern either. The Mavs are 1-0 all-time against the Lions, winning 79-63 in a game played in Omaha back on Dec. 9, 1989.
Media: Both games will be broadcast live on KOZN 1620 AM. David Gustafson will call all of the play-by-play beginning with the pre-game show 10 minutes before tip-off. The games will be available via a live web broadcast at omavs.com. Both games also may be viewed on-line at themiaa.tv.
Coming Up: The Mavericks will hit the road next week to play the Pittsburg State University Gorillas on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. They'll return home to host the Washburn University Ichabods on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3:30 p.m.
