This Week: The UNO women's basketball team hits the road to start the week, visiting the Pittsburg State University Gorillas on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 5:30 p.m. The Mavericks are back at Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1:30 p.m. to host the tenth-ranked Washburn University Lady Blues.
The Records: The Mavericks are 7-7 this season and 4-5 in the MIAA. They're coming off a 72-40 home loss to Missouri Southern on Saturday, Jan. 17. Pittsburg State is 11-5 and 6-3 in the league. The Gorillas picked up a 71-60 win over Fort Hays State last Saturday. Washburn is 14-3 on the year and 7-3 in the MIAA. The Lady Blues fell to Emporia State, 85-78, on Jan. 17.
The Coaches: Patty Patton Shearer is in her fifth season at UNO. She is 74-55 all time at UNO. Last year, the Mavericks started 14-1 (the best start in school history) and recorded their third-straight winning season at 17-12. A native of Marana, Ariz., Patton Shearer is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. Lane Lord is in his second year at Pittsburg State. He is 21-22 all-time guiding the Gorillas. Lord is a 1993 graduate of Tabor College. Ron McHenry is now in his ninth season leading Washburn. The WU alumnus is 228-47 all-time in Topeka.
The Series: The Mavericks have played Pittsburg State just once prior to this season. They earned a 76-67 victory at a tournament at Southwest Baptist on Dec. 4, 1998. The Mavs are 1-2 all-time against Washburn. UNO played its first MIAA game against the Lady Blues, losing 61-52 in Topeka on Dec. 3, 2008.
Media: Both games can be heard live on KOIL 1180 AM in Omaha. Gary Schaaf will call the action on Wednesday's game at Pittsburg State while David Gustafson will have the play-by-play on Saturday against Washburn. Both broadcasts begin with the pre-game show 10 minutes before the opening tip. The game also is available on-line at omavs.com and also may be viewed on-line at themiaa.tv.
