Gorillas Slip Past Mavericks in OT, 88-86

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Pittsburg State Gorillas got an 19-footer from Carlos Taylor with three seconds to go in overtime to beat the UNO men's basketball team, 88-86, on Wednesday night at John Lance Arena. The Mavericks dropped to 12-5 and 6-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
#Mitch Albers# led the Mavs with a game- and career-high 28 points but missed two free throws in overtime as UNO hit just 2 of 6 chances from the stripe in the extra frame.
The game got to overtime when PSU's T.J. Stukes fired up a rebound shot with just 1.5 seconds to go in regulation. The shot went down, and UNO's #Dion Curry# was called for a foul. Stukes completed the traditional three-point play to send the game to overtime, tied at 79.
The Gorillas played with a slim lead through most of overtime, but a layup by #Michael Jenkins# with 34 seconds remaining tied the game at 86. Jenkins had 19 points for the Mavs in the game.
That set the stage for Taylor whose final bucket came on a running, off-balance shot. He scored 5 of the Gorillas 9 points in the extra session. Taylor finished the game with 9 points.
#Andrew Bridger# had one more chance for the Mavericks but missed on a desperation toss at the buzzer.
Rodney Grace led the Gorillas with 22 points while Stukes had 19.
UNO had 18 turnovers in the game to just 5 for the Gorillas.
The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 when they host the Washburn University Ichabods at 3:30 p.m.
