Maverick Indoor Track Faces Early Challenge

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO indoor track and field team heads into uncharted territory this week as it prepares for the Razorback Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas. Maverick athletes will be at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. for two days of competition on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23 and 24.
The Mavericks have never participated in an indoor meet of this size and featuring competition from such a large number of Division I schools. Click here for a list of events and times.
UNO will be attempting to build on the success it had in sprint events last weekend at Nebraska's Holiday Inn Invite. Senior #Pinar Saka# broke her own school record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.36 seconds. That time is good enough to qualify her for the national indoor championship meet later this winter. Saka is seeded 4th among all runners in the 400 meter run in Arkansas.
In the 400 at Nebraska last weekend, coach Steve Smith's sprinters finished 1-2-4. Sophomore #Anja Puc#, who finished second, is seeded 17th, and fellow sophomore #Kayla Koepke#, who finished 4th, is seeded 43rd. Puc's time of 55.39 last week also has qualified her for the national meet.
Freshman #Maja Mihalinec# is the 42nd seed in the women's 200 meter dash. She posted a time of 24.93 last week at Nebraska to earn that spot in Fayetteville.
Two more freshman will toe the line for UNO in the women's 60 meter hurdles. #Lauren Kundert and Lianne McNaughton# are seeded 32nd and 33rd in the event.
The UNO women's 4 x 100 meter relay team gets the 10th seed out of 29 teams.
In the field events, the Mavericks' #Jenna Temme and Kelly Hollmann# will be 14th and 15th respectively in the high jump. Last week, both posted season-best jumps of 5 feet, 21/4 inches. In the triple jump, sophomore #Rasheema Pitt# is 17th seed because of a season-best jump of 38 feet, 11/4 inches.
UNO's #Heather Minssen# will be the ninth seed in the shot put. She's already a provisional qualifier for nationals with a put of 43 feet, 101/2 inches. Teammates #Madison Haugland# (17) and McNaugton (30) will also participate.
#Katie Harvey# will be UNO's highest seeded representative in the weight throw, having already posted a distance of 47 feet, 71/4 inches. She'll be seeded 14th while Haugland will be 26th.
