OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha athletic department will be raising money for brain cancer research when it hosts “Leap For a Cure” Night on Saturday, February 7 as the Maverick hockey team hosts Western Michigan. The night will feature a jersey auction, special family ticket package and a head shaving contest. The night is being held in conjunction with the Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center.
“This event will be fun for our fans and student-athletes while also drawing much needed awareness to brain cancer research,” said Michele Roberts, Associate Athletic Director. “The UNO community has a long history of supporting charitable events, and we anticipate enthusiastic participation from the many individuals and businesses who support UNO athletics.”
Throughout the month of January leading up to the Feb. 7 game, Maverick fans will be able to choose which UNO hockey player or coach they'd most like to see have his head shaved at center ice. Containers representing individual players and coaches will be placed at home games on Jan. 9, 10, 23 and 24 as well as Feb. 6 and 7. Fans vote by placing donations into that player or coach's container. The player or coach who draws the most money will have his head shaved at center ice by a young brain cancer survivor following the game. If $30,000 is raised, the entire team and coaches will shave their heads.
“Our players and coaches are enthusiastically supporting 'Leap For a Cure'” Night,” said #Mike Kemp#, UNO head hockey coach. “We hope our fans will enjoy the evening while helping to raise a significant amount of money for brain cancer research.”
The Mavericks will wear special brain cancer awareness jerseys during the games on Feb.6 and 7. Those jerseys will be sold in a silent auction with the winning bids announced after the Feb. 7 game.
UNO will offer special ticket pricing for the Feb. 7 game. All tickets will be a family-friendly $6.
Leap for a Cure also will host a raffle throughout all four January home games for the chance to eat a pre-game meal with the UNO hockey team . The winner will be announced at the Jan. 24 game.
The Maverick hockey team returns to action in the CCHA on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9 and 10 when they host Northern Michigan University at Qwest Center Omaha. Game time is 7:05 p.m. both nights.
