KANSAS CITY, Mo. - #Nicole Baier and Lauren Fox# have been named players of the week by the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association on Wednesday for their performances last week against Washburn and Northwest Missouri State. The Mavericks beat the Lady Blues 4-0 and the Bearcats, 2-0.
It is Baier's fourth offensive player of the week award this season and Fox's second defensive player of the week award. The two helped UNO improve its record to 11-1-1 in the MIAA and take a one-point lead over Truman in the race for the conference title.
Baier continued her scoring surge with four goals and an assist in both of UNO's wins. The redshirt freshman forward netted two goals, including the game winner against Washburn on Oct. 22 in the 34th minute. She scored her second goal in the 54th minute. Baier assisted on Lindsey Nealon's goal in the 73rd minute, which came off a corner kick.
On Oct. 24 against NWMSU, Baier found the back of the net two times in the first eight minutes, including her sixth game winner of the year. The Omaha, Neb., native scored at 3:20 and 8:42 of the first half. Baier has seven goals and two assists in her last three games. She now has 16 goal and 11 assists on the year, both lead the team and the MIAA. Baier is now tied for sixth with Beth McGill (2005), Anne Willrett (2004) and Amanda Iwansky (2005) for the most goals in a single season. Stephanie Kruse is UNO's single-season record holder with 24 goals in 2002.
Fox improved her record to 10-1-1 on the year and posted back-to-back shutouts in UNO's wins. On Oct. 22 against WU, Fox made one save. On Oct. 24 against the Bearcats, she stopped six shots. The Beatrice, Neb., native now has a career high 6.6 shutouts on the year and matched her career high from last season with her 10th win of the year.
It is the eighth time this season that a UNO player has earned the player of the week award. Baier has collected the award on Oct. 20, Sept. 15 and Sept. 8. Fox earned the defensive award on Sept. 22. Senior forward #Jessica Powers# received the offensive award on Oct. 6 and Oct. 13.
The Maverick will be back in action tomorrow for the their final home game of the regular season when they host Missouri Southern (4-12-0, 2-10-0 MIAA). The match is slated for 3 p.m. at UNO Soccer Field.
