Mavs Resume Play With Three MIAA Matches This Week

After taking all of last week off, the 15th-ranked Mavericks (15-4, 5-1 MIAA) will play their first match in 11 days Wednesday as they kick off another busy week of MIAA play.
The Mavericks, second in the MIAA, will hit the road Wednesday with a 7 p.m. match at Northwest Missouri State (10-11, 1-4 MIAA). Nebraska-Omaha will then return to Sapp Fieldhouse to host Missouri Western (7-12, 0-6 MIAA) Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 21 Truman (15-7, 3-3 MIAA) on Saturday at 5 p.m.
While much of the MIAA played in tournaments last weekend, the Mavericks remained idle. Prior to last week, they went 2-1 during the final week of September with a win against then-No. 6 Washburn and a loss against third-ranked Emporia. They also beat Fort Hays State that week.
Myers and Thommes Sweep MIAA Honors
Sophomore setter Emily Myers earned her third MIAA specialist of the week award and senior middle blocker Ellen Thommes earned her first hitter of the week award as the Mavericks swept the conference's weekly honors from two weeks ago.
Myers averaged 11.62 assists per set and 2.77 digs a set in three matches. She had 30 or more assists in all three and also reached double figures in the matches for three double-doubles. She had 62 assists and 14 digs in a loss at No. 3 ESU on September 26 and she had 56 assists and 11 digs against No. 6 Washburn on September 23.
Thommes hit .452 during the week and averaged 4.23 points a set with 3.54 kills and 0.85 blocks. She had 19 kills and hit .450 against Washburn and at Emporia State, she had 18 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Thommes blocked six shots against Washburn and then had four in a 3-0 sweep at Fort Hays State September 25.
Shires Earns Major Milestone With 400th Win
The Mavericks cruised to three easy set victories over Southwest Baptist on September 19 at Sapp Fieldhouse to give head coach Rose Shires her 400th career win. Since then, the 20-year UNO coach has improved her record to 402-219. Shires, already UNO's career wins leader, became the 21st active coach in NCAA II to win 400 matches and she is already the winningest active coach in the MIAA.
Thommes Continues Dominance on Team and in MIAA
Senior middle blocker Ellen Thommes led the MIAA coming into the week with a .447 attack percentage, nearly 30 points better than her nearest competitor. She was second in the league and first on the team with 1.03 blocks a set and she was sixth in the MIAA and first on the team with 3.39 kills a set.
Thommes became the 17th member of UNO's 1,000 kill club earlier this year and with 244 this season, she has 1,131 in her four years to rank 14th in UNO history. She moved into the top-10 in blocks at UNO with 386 and she's seventh with 347 block assists.
Myers Second in the MIAA in Assists
Sophomore setter Emily Myers is second in the MIAA with 11.28 assists per set. She has had 30 or more assists in every match this year and she's topped 50 six times. She also has eight double-doubles this year combining double-figure assist totals with double-figure dig totals. Her last three matches have been double-doubles.
Mavericks Move Up Again In Top 25 Poll
The Mavericks remained in the No. 15 spot in the AVCA national ranking released Monday. UNO is one of five MIAA teams in the top 25 and overall, seven of UNO's 2009 opponents are in the ranking.
About This Week's Opponents
Northwest Missouri State enters the match at 10-11 and just 1-4 in the MIAA with the lone win coming at Fort Hays State. Missouri Western is the lone winless team in the MIAA at 7-12 overall and 0-6 in league play. The Griffons have lost nine straight after a season-long six-match winning streak. Truman, ranked 21st in the country, is 15-7 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA. The Bulldogs have won four of their last five with the loss coming against West Texas A&M.
The Mavericks have played seven ranked teams this year with a 3-4 record.
