WAYNE, Neb. – Shot putter #Heather Minssen# set a new school record as the UNO indoor track and field team began the season at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Wayne State on Saturday at the Wayne State College Recreation Center. Minssen's performance was the highlight of a strong day by a limited number of Mavericks who participated in the meet.
Minssen threw 48 feet, one and a quarter inches to win the shot and become an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II national meet. Her throw is also the best in Division II nationally this season. She broke the old school record of 47 feet, one-quarter inch set by Theresa Williams in 1997. Minssen's throw was also a meet record.
Sprinter #Molly Belling# returned to the track after missing the last two years due to injury to win the 55-meter dash in a meet-record time of 7.33. Teammate #Jody-Ann Coore# finished fourth at 7.60.
UNO's #Kayla Murphy# won the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.70, just ahead of Coore who was second at 8.76.
No team scores were awarded in the meet. The Mavericks brought just six athletes to the event.
UNO returns to action in the new year when it takes part in the Holiday Inn Invitational hosted by Nebraska on Jan. 15 and 16.
