Minssen Hits New Shot Mark at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa - Senior #Heather Minssen# set a new national best in the shot put to pace the UNO track and field team in the second day of competition at the Iowa State Invitational on Saturday. The Mavericks also won the 4 x 400 meter relay, outpacing the field by more than four seconds.
Minssen, already the holder of the nation's best throw in Division II, threw 49 feet, two and one-quarter inches, the third time she's reset that mark. She's already qualified for the National Championship meet.
On the track, the team of #Kayla Koepke#, #Maja Mihalinec#, #Anja Puc and Shannon Moore# won the 4 x 400 meter relay in a time of 3:49.60. Mihalinec, making her first appearance in the relay, takes the place of standout #Pinar Saka# who completed her indoor eligibility last season. That time is good for provisional qualification for the national meet.
Moore anchored the relay which edged out her former school, Butler Junior College.
“We knew we had to win it,” Moore said. “It definitely felt good to win and to beat my former school, but I could not have done it without my teammates.”
Mihalinec earned a provisional qualifying mark in the 60 meter dash in the preliminary heat, running a time of 7.64. She finished third in the finals with a time of 7.67. Teammate #Molly Belling# was eighth in a time of 7.91. Mihalinec also qualified provisionally in the 200 m in a time of 24.69.
Puc ran a time of 1:24.34 in the 600 yard dash to finish second, two seconds behind Kianna Elahi of Iowa State. The 600 is not a national event.
Koepke ran a personal best and a provisional mark in the 400 meters in a time of 57.04, good for second place.
“It's a big surprise for me,” Koepke said. “I think it's been huge this season how we all push each other to do well. It's definitely paying off.”
Moore posted a provisional qualifying time in the 60 m hurdles with a time of 8.84 in the prelims. She finished fourth in the final with a time of 8.97.
“These girls did some big things this weekend,” head coach Steve Smith said. “This was a really great meet for us…all the way around.”
The Mavericks will take part in two meets next week - the Jayhawk Invite hosted by Kansas and the Husker Multi Challenge at Lincoln.
