SEATTLE, Wash. - The UNO track and field team improved on many of its national marks at the Husky Classic, hosted by the University of Washington. Two of those marks are best in the nation in Division II. The Mavericks were competing against some of the Pac-10's best athletes in the process.
#Anja Puc# improved on her nation-leading mark in the 800 meters, posting a time of 2:07.89, almost two seconds faster than her previous race just last weekend, and a new school record. Newly added jumper #Nkeiruka Domike# bested her own top mark in the triple jump with a distance of 41 feet and seven inches, earning her fourth-place in the event. She improved on her previous mark by an inch and also bettered her own school record.
“I think we really showed toughness at the event,” said head coach Steve Smith. “We were competing against Pac-10, Division-I opponents and I thought we did well against them.”
A group of Mavericks improved their national marks on Saturday, led by senior #Shannon Moore#. Moore ran top-15 finishes in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. Her time of 8.70 earned her a 12th place finish in the 60-meter hurdles improving on her previous time of 8.75, which currently ranks ninth place in D-II national rankings. Moore also finished the 200-meter event with an 11th place time of 25.28.
Sophomore #Maja Mihalinec# made a wave in her national times as she ran well in both the 60-meter and 200-meter events. Her previous time of 7.64, presently ranked 14th in D-II nationally, was spiked on Saturday with a time of 7.59 earning her sixth-place in the event. In the 200-meter she took a fourth-place finish with a time 24.79, edged out by Oregon's Brianne Theisen at 24.68.
Junior #Kayla Koepke# moved up the D-II rankings in the 400-meter, finishing with a seventh place time of 56.63 to improve her season-best by half a second.
The Mavs also sent several athletes to compete in the Wildcat Open held in Wayne, Nebraska. Sophomore sprinter #Jody-Ann Coore took a first-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.45 followed by teammate Kayla Murphy's second-place time of 8.57. Freshman distance runner Brittany Phillips# won the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:15.24, finishing more than a minute ahead of the competition. The Mavericks also took first-place in the 4x400-meter relay with a combined time of 4:35.39. Senior sprinter #Molly Belling# narrowly missed a first-place finish in the 55-meters, finishing just two-tenths of a second short with a time of 7.38.
UNO will next compete in Lincoln at the Nebraska Tune-up on February, 19. This will be the final test for the Mavericks before the MIAA Indoor Championships one week later.
