Team USA, Blais Take Opener at World Juniors

SASKATOON, Sask. - Team USA, led by UNO hockey coach #Dean Blais#, won its first game of pool play, beating Slovakia 7-3 on Saturday night in the opening game of the International Iice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. Seven different players scored for the Americans who overcame a 2-0 deficit.
"I was happy with our resiliancy after falling behind early," said Blais on the USA Hockey web site. "We created a lot of scoring chances and showed a lot of poise after those two quick goals."
Team USA surrendered two powerplay goals in the first 5:33 of the game but got a goal back halfway through the first when John Carlson scored to make it 2-1 after one.
The Americans tied the game two minutes into the second period on a tally by Jeremy Morin and got goals from team captain Derek Stephan of the University of Wisconsin and Matt Donovan of the University of Denver to build their lead to 4-2.
Slovakia got one goal back on a powerplay, but the US would score three unanswered goals to pull away. Danny Kristo (University of North Dakota), Jordan Schroeder (University of Minnesota) and Jerry D'Amigo (RPI) were the other goal scorers.
Mike Lee of St. Cloud State made 17 saves in goal for Team USA.
The Americans will face Switzerland next on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
