U.S., Blais Topped By Canada In Shootout, 5-4

SASKATOON, Sask. - Team USA, led by UNO hockey coach #Dean Blais#, lost a thrilling game to Canada in the final game of pool play, 5-4 in a shootout, at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship. The Canadians erased a two-goal deficit in the final ten minutes of regulation and then scored on all three chances in the shootout.
The Americans finish pool play at 3-0-1-0 and advance to play in the quarterfinals against Finland on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 8 p.m. CT.
"Tonight was a great hockey game for fans of these two countries," said Blais to USA Hockey's web site. "It's tough to lose when a game goes to a shootout like tonight. But I thought both teams played great."
The U.S. broke a 2-2 tie when Tyler Johnson knocked home the rebound of a shot by Jerry D'Amigo of RPI for a shorthanded goal with just 11 seconds remaining in the second period.
The Americans then stretched their lead to 4-2 just 61 seconds into the third period. Danny Kristo of the University of North Dakota beat Canada's goalie Jake Allen just as a U.S. penalty kill expired.
But Canada got goals from Jordan Eberle and Alex Pietrangelo to tie the game at 4-4. After a scoreless overtime, the Canadians scored on all three shootout attempts against U.S. goalie Jack Campbell. The Americans matched the host country in their first two attempts by Kristo and Jeremy Morin but were stopped on the third.
Philip McRae and Jordan Schoeder of the University of Minnesota also scored for Team USA.
Canada outshot the U.S. 35-28, the first time in the first four games that the Americans have been outshot.
