Former Mavs Make News on Eve of 2009 Baseball Seas

OMAHA, Neb. - Two former UNO Maverick baseball players are taking their careers to the next level. Both Chris Weimer and Dustin Koca have signed professional contracts to play this spring.
Weimer singed a professional contract with the Chicago Cubs in January. He will report to the team's spring training facility in Arizona later this month. Weimer was a 2008 First Team All-American and was later named the 2008 UNO Male Athlete of the Year after a sterling senior season at UNO. He led the Mavericks with a .405 batting average while also compiling team bests in hits (92), home runs (23) and RBI (77). Weimer also was named to the Daktronics All-Central Region team and was tabbed for the All-North Central Conference team for the second straight year.
Koca, a 2008 First Team All-American for UNO, signed a professional contract with the Evansville (Ind.) Otters of the Frontier League. Koca split his senior season as a pitcher and rightfielder for the Mavericks. He batted .365 with 14 homeruns and 61 RBI. On the mound, he posted a 5-2 record and a 4.61 ERA in more than 66 innings of work. He struck out 58 while walking just 20. In addition to his All-American honors, Koca was named to the all-NCC team and was a first team All-Central Region pick.
The Mavericks open the 2009 season this weekend with a pair of double headers against Colorado Christian University on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13 and 14. Each day begins at 1 p.m. from Lakewood, Colo. and can be heard via a live webcast at omavs.com.
