Maverick Baseball Team Launches 2009 Season

This Week: The University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team opens the 2009 season with a pair of double-headers against the Colorado Christian University Cougars on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14 and 15. The first pitch on both days is set for 1 p.m. CST.
The Records: Last season, the Mavericks posted a record of 45-13 overall and 21-1 in their final season in the North Central Conference. The Mavs won the final NCC championship and made their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament. They finished the season ranked eighth in the nation. The Cougars are already 3-0 on the young season. They're coming off a three-game sweep of the College of Santa Fe last weekend. They won by a combined score of 54-23.
The Coaches: Bob Herold is in his tenth season as the UNO head coach. The 1972 graduate of UNO was a 1971 NAIA All-American for the Mavericks. He is 300-184-2 all-time as a college head coach. Rob Pegg is in his fourth season as the head coach at Colorado Christian. He is a graduate of Vanguard University.
The Series: This will be the first ever meeting between the Mavericks and Colorado Christian on the baseball diamond.
Pre-Season Poll: The Mavericks were picked to finish third in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association according to a pre-season poll of the league's coaches. UNO received 78 points in the voting, finishing behind Central Missouri (99 points) and Emporia State (92 points).

Coming Up: The Mavericks will be in Warrensburg, Mo. next weekend for a trio of games in the Holiday Inn Classic hosted by the University of Central Missouri. The Mavericks will play Winona State on Friday, Feb. 20 and again on Sunday, Feb. 22. Friday's game starts at 12 p.m. while Sunday's contest begins at 11 a.m. In between, the Mavs will take on Upper Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 12 p.m.
