Maverick Women Shoot To Continue Streak This Week

This Week: The UNO women's basketball team has clinched a spot in the MIAA playoffs. The Mavericks now will try to move up in the standings with two games this week. They'll host the University of Central Missouri Jennies on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. They'll finish the week against the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats in Bolivar, Mo. on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
The Records: The Mavericks are 12-10 this season and 8-8 in the MIAA. They earned a 73-46 win at Truman State last Saturday. The Jennies are 15-8 overall and 10-6 in league play, one place ahead of the Mavericks in the standings. They beat Fort Hays State 72-67 last weekend. The Bearcats are 7-16 this season and have a record of 4-12 in the MIAA. They're coming off a 99-93 loss to Washburn last Saturday.
The Coaches: Patty Patton Shearer is in her fifth season at UNO. She is 79-59 all time in Omaha. Last year, the Mavericks started 14-1 (the best start in school history) and recorded their third-straight winning season at 17-12. A native of Marana, Ariz., Patton Shearer is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. Dave Slifer is in his fifth season at Central Missouri and his 20th season overall. He is 471-153 as a head coach and 88-54 in his time at Central. Slifer is a 1982 graduate of Mount Mercy College. J.C. Carter is in his first year at Southwest Baptist, his first stop as a head coach. He graduated from SBU in 2003.
The Series: The Mavericks trail the all-time series with Central Missouri, 10-8. They lost to the Jennies in Warrensburg, Mo., 66-62, on Jan. 10. UNO and Southwest Baptist are tied 2-2 in their all-time series. The Mavericks earned an 85-72 win at Sapp Fieldhouse on Jan. 14.
Media: Both games can be heard live on KOIL 1180 AM in Omaha. David Gustafson will call the action. The games begin with the pre-game show 10 minutes before the opening tip. The games also are available on-line at omavs.com and also may be viewed on-line at themiaa.tv.
Coming Up: The Mavericks finish the regular season next week when they play their final two league games. UNO travels to Joplin, Mo. to face the Missouri Southern State University Lions on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. They'll return home to host the Pittsburg State University Gorillas on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m.
