OMAHA, Neb. - Hardy defense spurred the UNO women's basketball team to a 65-44 win over the University of Central Missouri on Wednesday night at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks held the Jennies to just 17 second-half points to win going away and improve to 13-10 on the season and 9-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
The Mavericks have won a season-best four straight games. They also are a season-high three games above .500 and above the .500 mark in MIAA play for the first time this season.
The Mavericks actually trailed 27-26 after the first half in spite of outshooting Central Missouri nearly 41 percent to 34 percent. The Jennies couldn't build a lead larger than six in the half, and two threes by #Cayla Hargrove# in the last two minutes got the Mavericks to within one. She finished with 11 points including three three-pointers.
The Jennies came out cold in the second half, in large part because of UNO's smothering defense. At the other end, the Mavericks started with a 12-0 run to take a 39-27 lead with 14:04 remaining.
Central Missouri got its first points of the half on two free throws by Katy Davenport and got as close as seven on a three from Taylor Hanson.
But the Mavericks would allow Central just three more field goals while getting balanced scoring. #LaToya Wright# had eight second-half points on her way to a game-high 16. In addition to Hargrove, #Alyssa Green had 11 and a team-best nine rebounds while Ashley Nelson# also had 11. #Amanda Brodsack# had a well-rounded night with nine points, six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and four steals.
The Jennies, the team directly above the Mavericks in the MIAA standings, got a team-best nine points from Davenport and seven each from Kara Fleming and Dominica Blakemore. Central Missouri dropped to 15-9 on the season and 10-7 in MIAA play.
The Mavericks finish the week with a trip to Bolivar, Mo. to face the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
