Maverick Women Carry Streak Into Final Week

This Week: The UNO women's basketball team finishes the regular season this week and, in the process, will try to extend its season-high five-game winning streak. The Mavericks travel to Joplin, Mo. to face the Missouri Southern State University Lions on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. They'll return home to host the Pittsburg State University Gorillas on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m.
The Records: The Mavericks are 14-10 this season and 10-8 in the MIAA, good for sixth place. They forged an 81-77 win at Southwest Baptist University last Saturday. Missouri Southern is 17-8 overall and 11-7 in the league, putting it in a tie for fourth with Central Missouri. The Lions lost to Fort Hays State 69-66 last Saturday. Pittsburg State is in third place in the MIAA with a record of 13-5. The Gorillas are 18-7 overall. They picked up a big 94-87 triple overtime win over ninth-ranked Washburn last Saturday at home.
The Coaches: Patty Patton Shearer is in her fifth season at UNO. She is 81-59 all time in Omaha. Last year, the Mavericks started 14-1 (the best start in school history) and recorded their third-straight winning season at 17-12. A native of Marana, Ariz., Patton Shearer is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. Maryann Mitts is in her eighth season at Missouri Southern. She is 216-146 as a head coach and 133-89 all-time in Joplin, Mo. She is a 1992 graduate of Rockhurst University. This is the second season for Lane Lord as head coach at Pittsburg State. The 1993 graduate of Tabor College is 28-24 all-time as a head coach.
The Series: UNO and Missouri Southern have each won one game in this nascent all-time series. In their last meeting, the Lions earned a 72-40 win over the Mavericks at Sapp Fieldhouse on Jan. 17. The Mavs and Gorillas are also tied 1-1 in their all-time series. Pittsburg State won 69-56 at home on Jan. 21.
Media: Both games can be heard live on KOIL 1180 AM in Omaha. Gary Schaaf will have the play-by-play on Wednesday while David Gustafson will call the action on Saturday. The games begin with the pre-game show 10 minutes before the opening tip. The games also are available on-line at omavs.com and also may be viewed on-line at themiaa.tv.
Coming Up: The Mavericks will await the results of all other games in the MIAA to see where they will be seeded for their first ever MIAA Basketball Championships to be held in Kansas City, Mo. from March 5 to 8. If the standings were to remain as they are, the Mavericks would play Pittsburg State in a first round game on Friday, March 6.
