UNO Men Near MIAA Finish Line

This Week: The University of Nebraska at Omaha men's basketball team finishes the regular season this week. The Mavericks will visit the Missouri Southern State University Lions on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. and then return home to host the Pittsburg State University Gorillas on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 3:30 p.m.
The Records: The Mavericks are 16-9 on the season and 10-8 in the MIAA, good for a tie for fifth place. UNO lost to fourth-ranked Southwest Baptist 98-85 last Saturday. The Lions are 17-11 overall and 7-11 in league play. They're coming off a 69-65 loss at Fort Hays State last weekend. The Gorillas are 10-15 this year and 5-13 in the MIAA. They dropped an 80-69 decision at home to Washburn last Saturday.
The Coaches: Derrin Hansen is in his fourth season as UNO head coach. The 1991 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University is 68-48 as a head coach. He spent seven years at UNO as an assistant coach before taking over the head job in 2005. Robert Corn is in his 20th season at Missouri Southern. He is 308-258 all-time at his alma mater ('78). Gene Iba is the head coach at Pittsburg State. Now in his 14th year, he has a record of 252-152 at PSU and a mark of 478-355 overall. He is a 1963 graduate of Tulsa University.
The Series: The Mavericks are 2-0 in their brief history against Missouri Southern. They picked up a 74-64 win over the then 13th-ranked Lions on Jan. 17 at Sapp Fieldhouse. UNO trails the all-time series with Pittsburg State, 20-14. The Gorillas beat the Mavs in overtime, 88-86, in the first meeting of the season back on Jan. 21 in Pittsburg, Kan. It was the second straight overtime game between the two schools.
Media: Both games will be broadcast live on KOZN 1620 AM. Gary Schaaf will call the action on Wednesday while David Gustafson will have the play-by-play on Saturday. Both games begin with the pre-game show 10 minutes before the opening tip. The games also are available on-line at omavs.com and also may be viewed on-line at themiaa.tv.
Coming Up: The Mavericks will await the the outcome of the remainder of the MIAA schedule to see where they will be seeded in the first round of the MIAA Basketball Championship to be held in Kansas City, Mo. from March 6-8.
