Mavericks Take Aim At MIAA Crown

OMAHA, Neb - The University of Nebraska at Omaha track and field team will head to Warrensburg, Mo. this weekend, Feb. 27-Mar. 1, to take part in the 2009 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Central Missouri.
The meet will get underway Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. with the pentathlon events. Field events begin Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with running events starting at 4:30 p.m. The field events are scheduled to wrap up early Sunday beginning at noon while all running event finals will take place starting at 2 p.m. on the final day of competition. Nine teams will take part in the three-day meet as they try to unseat returning conference champion Missouri Southern.
The Mavericks will be led by senior #Pinar Saka#, a 2008 North Central Conference champion and national indoor qualifier at 200 and 400 meters, and fellow 2008 national qualifier sophomore Anj Puc. Both hold NCAA DII and conference best times this season. Saka leads all MIAA runners with the best posted times at 200, 400 and 600 meters while Puc holds nearly a two-second edge over the second fasters runner at 800 meters.
UNO runners have recorded the top conference times at 60, 200, 400, 600, 800 meters, as well as the top time in the 4x440 relay.
Junior #Shannon Moore# will provide some of the punch for the Mavericks in the field events, having collected the second-highest point total in the pentathlon and posted the third best conference high jump mark and sixth best long jump of the season.
Last year's NCC runner-up in the shot put, #Heather Minssen#, finds herself in the same select company this season as she heads to the MIAA meet with the third best shot put throw in the conference this season.
