OMAHA, Neb. - Seniors Justin Petersen and Michael Jenkins scored in double figures to lead the Mavericks to an 86-78 win over Pittsburg State in Sapp Fieldhouse Saturday. Those two joined Nate Owen in being honored prior to the game in Senior Day ceremonies as Nebraska-Omaha played its final home game of the season.
The Mavericks wrapped up the regular sesaon at 17-10 and 11-9 in the MIAA. UNO is currently tied for fifth in the conference and will be the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Championship Tournament next weekend in Kansas City. UNO will play the loser of the Emporia State-Fort Hays State game Thursday in the quarterfinal. That team will be the No. 4 seed.
Jenkins shot 4 for 10 from the field and made 11 of 13 free throw attempts to score 20 points while Dion Curry had 15 and Petersen and Matt Newman each had 14. Curry added a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Overall, the Mavericks were 85 percent from the free throw line, hitting 33 of 39 tries, including their final 15. The Gorillas also shot well, making 24 of 28 to shoot 86 percent.
The Mavericks never trailed in the game. They scored the first five points of the day and then led by 10, 22-12 at 10:41 before PSU went on a 10-0 run to tie the game with 8:24 left in the half.
The Gorillas tied it again a minute later but Andrew Bridger followed with two free throws that started a 14-0 run and UNO led 38-24 with 3:58 left in the half. UNO hit four straight 3-pointers during that run with Newman making two of them.
The Mavs led by 10 at halftime then PSU quickly cut it down to five to start the second half but the Gorillas never got closer than that.
Curry hit a lay-up at 13:28 to put UNO up 10 and then another at 11:29 gave UNO a 16-point lead, its largest of the game.
The Mavericks were 12 of 12 from the free throw line in the final five minutes and they made 15 straight to finish the game.
Bridger led the Mavs with four assists and he tied Jenkins with three steals. UNO won the rebound battle, 47-36.
