Mavericks Enter Final Week of Leap For A Cure
Feb 3, 2009 | General, Hockey
OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha is planning one final push to meet its fundraising goal for Leap For A Cure Night with the Mavericks. For the last month, the Mavericks have been raising awareness of brain cancer research and raising money for a cure. That effort comes to a head on Saturday, Feb. 7 when the UNO hockey team hosts Western Michigan at 7 p.m. at Qwest Center Omaha.
To this point, the Mavericks have raised more than $19,000 through donations and a unique head-shaving contest. Since the beginning of January, hockey fans have been voting on which Maverick player they'd most like to see have his head shaved immediately following the game. They vote by placing donations in specially-marked jars at all home games. The player who has raised the most money will have a meeting with the shears following the game.
To this point, goaltender #Jeremie Dupont is in the lead followed by defenseman Mike Phillippi and forward Dan Charleston#.
If the Mavericks are able to raise $30,000 for the cause, all UNO players and coaches will have their heads shaved.
The Mavericks will wear special brain cancer awareness jerseys during the games on Feb. 6 and 7. Those jerseys will be sold in a silent auction with the winning bids announced after the Feb. 7 game.
UNO also will distribute souvenir lights to the first 5,000 fans at the game on Saturday night courtesy of the Methodist Hospital Foundation. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to take part in a very special pregame ceremony. KETV Newswatch 7 anchor Brandi Petersen and Channel 94.1 personality Jeff Degan will host the evening's festivities.
Tickets to these and all remaining UNO hockey games are on sale at the Qwest Center box office and through the Mavericks' box office at Sapp Fieldhouse. To order by phone, please call (402) 554-MAVS.
