Maverick Women Face Two MIAA Foes This Week

This Week: The UNO women's basketball team plays a pair of games this week, traveling south to take on the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m. The Mavericks return home to host the fourth-ranked Emporia State University Hornets on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
The Records: The Mavericks are 9-9 this season and 5-7 in the MIAA. They moved back to the .500 mark with an 88-53 win over Rockhurst Hawks last Saturday. The Bearcats are 6-14 this season and 2-11 in the MIAA. They lost to Fort Hays State 70-60 last Saturday. The Hornets are 18-2 this season and lead the MIAA with a record of 12-1. They picked up a 67-58 win over Truman State on Sunday.
The Coaches: Patty Patton Shearer is in her fifth season at UNO. She is 76-58 all time at UNO. Last year, the Mavericks started 14-1 (the best start in school history) and recorded their third-straight winning season at 17-12. A native of Marana, Ariz., Patton Shearer is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. Gene Steinmeyer is in his 10th season as head coach at Northwest and his 25th season overall. He is 137-141 in his time at Maryville. He is a 1973 graduate of Nebraska-Kearney. Brandon Schneider is in his eleventh season leading Emporia State. He has compiled a record of 268-63 in that time. He is a 1995 graduate of Wayland Baptist University.
The Series: UNO is 12-11 all-time against Northwest Missouri State. The Mavs beat the Bearcats 87-63 in the first meeting on Dec. 13. UNO and Emporia State have a similarly close all-time series. It's tied at three wins apiece. The Hornets topped the Mavericks 85-67 when the two teams last played on Dec. 31.
Media: Both games can be heard live on KOIL 1180 AM in Omaha. David Gustafson will call the action. The games begin with the pre-game show 10 minutes before the opening tip. The games also are available on-line at omavs.com and also may be viewed on-line at themiaa.tv.
