UNO Pitching Trio Lifts Mavs To 4-1 Victory

WINTERHAVEN, Fla. - Sophomore pitcher #Tom Schmidt# went five strong innings, striking out six and allowing just one unearned run to lead the University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team past Kentucky Wesleyan 4-1 Sunday in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
After pounding out 18 hits on Saturday, the Mavericks offense resorted to small-ball tactics to push across four runs on eight hits. #Mat Eikmeier# led the way for UNO, going 3-for-4 on the day and driving in a run with RBI single in the sixth.
Trailing 1-0 through five innings of play the Mavericks got things going in the top-half of the sixth. Senior shortstop #Evan Porter# lead off the frame with a single to center and scored two batters later on a KWU throwing error to tie the game. After #Jeremy Klein reached on a fielder's choice Eikmeier drove in the go ahead run with an RBI single to center. The Mavericks added a third run in sixth on a Matt Meyer# sacrifice fly to center.
UNO added an insurance run in the eighth as KWU walked #Travis Jacobi# with the bases loaded to make the score 4-1.
UNO's bullpen continued to dominate on Sunday as Schwab came on in relief of Schmidt in the bottom of the sixth and worked three scoreless innings before handing the ball off to Strawn in the bottom of the ninth. Strawn set down Kentucky Wesleyan in order to pick up his first save of the season.
The Mavericks are now 9-3 on the season and will return to action Monday, Mar. 2, with a doubleheader against Grand Valley State at 8:30 a.m. CST
