OMAHA, Neb. - Beth Haley had a win and a save, both in relief as the 23rd-ranked Mavericks swept Wayne State (Neb.) by identical 2-1 scores Wednesday afternoon in their home-opener at Claussen-Westgate Field after playing their first 25 games on the road.
Nebraska-Omaha won the opener in nine innings and then got the second one in regulation to improve to 22-5 overall. UNO will open its first season of MIAA play on the road Friday at 1 p.m. at Pittsburg State.
Haley entered the first game in the sixth inning with the score tied 1-1 and a runner on first. She ended the inning with the next batter and then she shut down the Wildcats in the final three innings, allowing no hits and facing the minimum.
Kristi Meneely doubled to lead off the ninth and then Jenna Dell moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. With one out Amanda Bader grounded to the shortstop and Meneely scored the game-winner after the throw went to first base.
Wayne State opened scoring in the first inning off a single and then an error and then the Mavericks tied the score in the second when Jenna Dell led off with a single and then Molly Feichtinger, who pinch ran for her, scored on a single by Lindsey Slocum.
Neither team scored through regulation and the Mavericks went into their fourth extra-inning game in six contests.
Haley improved to 7-3 with the win with one strikeout. Slocum started the game in the circle and allowed hour hits and an unearned run through the first 5 2/3 innings.
In the second game Melissa Negrete pitched UNO to a 2-1 advantage until she was pulled in the sixth inning with runners on first and second. Haley came in and allowed a single to load the bases but got the next batter to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Haley put two runners on in the seventh inning but another double play and then a strikeout ended the game to give her the first save of the year for UNO. Negrete improved to 8-2 with the win, striking out one and allowing five hits without a walk.
UNO went on top first this time, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Amanda Bader doubled and then scored on Julia Krejci's double. WSC tied the game in the third off a leadoff home run but Treightin Yates drove in the winning run in the fifth with a double to center field.
Yates went 2 for 3 in the second game after an 0-for-4 effort in the opener.
