Mavericks Face Fort Hays State First at MIAA Champ

This Week: The postseason begins for the University of Nebraska at Omaha men's basketball team when it faces the Fort Hays State University Tigers in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championship on Thursday, March 5. Game time is 2:15 p.m. The game will pit the fifth-seeded Mavericks against the fourth-seeded Tigers.
The Records: The Mavericks finished the regular season at 17-10 and 11-9 in the MIAA. They wound up the regular season with an 86-78 win over Pittsburg State last Saturday at Sapp Fieldhouse. Fort Hays State was 19-8 overall during the regular season and 12-8 in the MIAA. The Tigers lost to Emporia State, 81-74 in their final game of the regular season on Saturday.
The Coaches: Derrin Hansen is in his fourth season as UNO head coach. The 1991 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University is 69-49 as a head coach. He spent seven years at UNO as an assistant coach before taking over the head job in 2005. Mark Johnson is in his eighth year at Fort Hays State. The 1993 graduate of Pittsburg State is 157-74 all-time in Fort Hays, Kansas.
The Series: The Mavericks trail the all-time series with Pittsburg State, 20-14. The Gorillas beat the Mavs in overtime, 88-86, in the first meeting of the season back on Jan. 21 in Pittsburg, Kan. It was the second straight overtime game between the two schools.
Media: All Mavericks playoff games will be broadcast live on KOIL 1180 AM. This is a change from the regular season when men's games aired on KOZN. David Gustafson will have the play-by-play. The games begin with the pre-game show 10 minutes before the opening tip. The games also are available on-line at omavs.com.
Coming Up: A win on Thursday will send the Mavericks on to the semifinal round where they would play the winner of the (1) Southwest Baptist/(8)Missouri Western game on Saturday, March 7 at 12 p.m.
