PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Mavericks scored nine runs off 11 hits in the opener at Pittsburg State but couldn't get on the scoreboard in game two as they split a doubleheader with the Gorillas. UNO won game one, 9-0 in six innings and PSU took the night cap, 5-0.
UNO (36-11, 10-4 MIAA) will continue MIAA action with four games on the road this weekend, starting with a doubleheader at Southwest Baptist Friday at 2 p.m. and ending at 1 p.m. Saturday in a twin bill with Central Missouri.
The two teams kept zeros on the scoreboard in the opener for the first four innings and then the Mavericks scored their nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game with the run rule.
Julia Krejci opened the top of the fifth with a double, the first of four Mavericks hits in the inning. Molly Feichtinger and Lindsey Slocum singled in runs and Alli Hukill drove in two with a double.
In the sixth inning Feichtinger doubled in two runs and then Jenna Dell hit a three-run home run to left field that proved to be the game-ender.
Melissa Negrete pitched a complete game shutout for UNO. She allowed four hits and struck out three with a walk. The Gorillas never got a runner past second base.
In the second game it was the Mavericks who failed to score. Kristi Meneely and Katelyn Hinton both walked in the third inning but were left on base and in the seventh inning Hukill and Wellwood put together back-to-back hits but were also left on base. Hukill's hit broke up a no-hit bid by PSU pitcher Melissa Slayden.
Slocum pitched for UNO and allowed four runs in four innings. She gave up seven hits and struck out five.
