Mavs Hold On For 1-0 Win in Game 2 To Split At MSS

JOPLIN, Mo. - A run in the second inning was all the 21st-ranked Mavericks needed in game two to give them a 1-0 win at Missouri Southern and split a doubleheader that ended the regular season. Two errors in the bottom of the eighth inning of game one cost the Mavericks a 3-2 loss and a chance to sweep.
Nebraska-Omaha (40-13, 14-6) finished fourth in the MIAA and will be the No. 4 seed in the MIAA postseason tournament. The eight-team, double elimination event starts Thursday and ends Saturday. All games will be played on four fields at Blue Valley Recreation Complex in Overland Park, Kan.
In the night cap Alli Hukill singled to lead off the second. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kristin Wellwood and then to third on a single from Kristi Meneely. Katelyn Hinton then drove her in with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Lindsey Slocum started the game and went 6 2/3 innings to get the win. She struck out nine and walked none. With two outs in the seventh she gave up her seventh hit of the day and Beth Haley came in and finished the game to get her third save of the year. Slocum improved to 14-2.
In game one the Lions loaded the bases in the first extra inning off a hit, an error and an intentional walk. Natalie Nelson then hit a two-out grounder that was misplayed and the Lions scored the winning run.
MSSU got on the board in the bottom of the first inning off a pair of RBI hits. The Mavericks put a run across the plate in the second when Ashley Lynch singled and Wellwood scored on an error by the left fielder.
UNO tied the game in the fourth off an RBI hit from Lynch as she singled up the middle to score Hukill.
With the game tied, 2-2, UNO starter Melissa Negrete gave up a one-out double in the seventh and Haley was brought in to finish the game. She let the Lions load the bases but she eventually ended the inning with a strikeout to send it into extra innings.
The Mavs went down in order in the top of the eight.
Haley (11-5) suffered the loss as she gave up the unearned run in the bottom of the eighth. She went 1 1/3 innings and allowed two hits. Negrete went the first 6 1/3 innings and allowed five hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
