Offense Strong But Mavs Can't Overcome 12 Straight

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but Emporia State answered with 12 straight runs to defeat Nebraska-Omaha, 13-8 Saturday in the second round of the NCAA South Central Region tournament.
The Mavericks will now play an elimination game Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Central Missouri, the host school of the tournament.
Evan Porter had an infield single in the top of the first for UNO and then Drew Schwab doubled to drive him in. A single by Matt Eikmeier then drove him in to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
The 17th-ranked Hornets then had 14 hits in their first four innings, including three home runs and seven doubles, to take a 12-2 lead.
The Mavericks got two runs back in the fifth when Jeremy Klein drove in a pair with a double and then in the sixth they scored two more when Eikmeier and Brian Strawn had RBI hits. Two more runs in the top of the ninth off an Evan Porter double pulled UNO within five runs before they ran out of outs.
Ben Percival started on the mound for UNO and fell to 10-4 with the loss. He went 2 2/3 innings while allowing 12 hits and the first 11 runs.
Porter was 3 for 5 with a pair of RBI and Schwab had two hits and scored twice. The Mavericks had 14 hits while giving up 16 to the Hornets.
The three homers and eight doubles allowed this year by UNO are season highs, as are the 16 hits.
