Mules Erupt For 14 Runs to End Maverick Season

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Mavericks season came to an end Saturday as Central Missouri erupted for a 14-1 win in an elimination game in the NCAA South Central Region tournament at Crane Stadium.
27th-ranked Nebraska-Omaha fell to 41-20 while 13th-ranked UCM improved to 43-14. The Mavs won their first game of the NCAA tournament Thursday and then lost in the second round earlier Saturday, 13-8 to Emporia State.
The Mules hit a pair of solo home runs in the top of the first, just the second and third of the year off Maverick starter Kyle Dahman. They continued to add runs and built a 7-0 lead after four innings and a 12-0 lead after they batted in the seventh.
The Mavericks broke the shutout when Matt Eikmeier led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and then Brett Koehn drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
Central Missouri answered that with two more runs in the top of the eighth.
Dahman went 3 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs, all earned, off five hits with a strikeout and six walks. The next three Maverick relievers all gave up multiple runs as well.
Evan Porter went 2 for 4 in the game and ended his career as the school's record holder with 323 hits, 249 RBI, 75 doubles and 43 home runs. He will also finish in the top 10 in NCAA II career history in all those categories when the season is over.
Eikmeier and Koehn also had a pair of hits in the game.
UCM pitcher Mitch Stubenhofer went the distance and allowed 11 hits with a strikeout and no walks. Jon Wegener had four hits, three RBI and three runs scored for the Mules.
In their first season in the MIAA, the Mavs finished fourth in the regular season with a 27-13 record and they won the MIAA postseason tournament as the No. 4 seed.
