Minssen Wins Shot Put at Day One of MIAA Champions

JOPLIN, Mo. - #Heather Minssen# set a new personal best in winning the shot put at the first day of competition at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association outdoor track and field championships. The Mavericks sit in seventh place after day one with the finals of many of their strongest events to come on Sunday.
Host Missouri Southern leads the meet with 58 points. Truman State is in second with 40 and Fort Hays State is third with 33.
Minssen won the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, ten inches, four inches farther than her previous best this season. She has already provisionally qualified for the national championship meet. Teammate #Lianne McNaughton# finished in eighth place with a mark of 42 feet even.
#Shannon Moore#, who already earned ten points for the Mavericks by winning the heptathlon last weekend, was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, one inch.
Moore was busy on Saturday as she qualified for the finals in the 100 meter hurdles and the 200 and 400 meter dashes. She posted the top qualifying time in the hurdles at 14.50.
#Maja Mihalinec# qualified for the finals in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Her qualifying time of 12.47 in the 100 will have her seeded first.
#Kayla Koepke qualified for the finals in the 200 and 400 while Anja Puc# qualified for the final in the 800 meter dash.
In addition to the finals on the track, the finals of the discus, triple jump, javelin and high jump are all on tap Sunday for the women.
