Mavericks Open MIAA Tournament Against Emporia Sta

The University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team will travel to Kansas City, Kan. for the opening round of the MIAA conference tournament. The Mavericks will face off with top seed and 8th ranked Emporia State at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 8. The double-elimination tournament is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. on May 8 and will conclude on May 10 with the championship game at 1 p.m.
The Records
The Mavericks finished the regular season with a record 37-18 overall and 27-13 in the MIAA. UNO split the final series of the season with Washburn. The Mavs started out the weekend by winning game 1 of a doubleheader on May 2, 7-5 and then dropping the second game, 6-5. The following day the Ichabods took the third game of the series by a score of 14-4 with UNO striking back in the second game of the day to win, 11-7. Emporia State is 42-10 on the season and 29-17 in the MIAA.
The Coaches
Bob Herold is in his tenth season as the UNO head coach. The 1972 graduate of UNO was a 1971 NAIA All-American for the Mavericks. He is 332-202-2 all-time as a college head coach. Herold is assisted by Chris Gadsden (10th Season) and Dan McGinn (9th Season). Emporia State is coached by Bob Fornelli who is entering his sixth season as the head coach at Emporia and 13th season overall. He has a record of 258-99 at Emporia and 564-212 for his career. Fornelli is assisted by Jason Santangelo ( second season) and John Martin (first season).
The Series
UNO holds a slight lead over Emporia State in the all-time series. The Mavericks are 25-20 against the Hornets including a 1-3 record this season.
Team Leaders
Andrew Hansen leads the team in batting average at .422, doubles (30), runs (58), and hits (86). Evan Porter is the team leader in runs batted in with 45 and home-runs with eight on the season. Those eight home-runs tie Porter with Chris Weimer for UNO's career record in home-runs with 41. Ben Percival leads the team in wins with a record of 9-3 while Joe Holtmeyer is the team leader in strike-outs with 74. Brandon Dahl is the team leader in saves with four. Tom Schmidt is the team leader in earned runs average with a 2.96 era.
