Mavericks Announce Hockey Recruits For 2009-2010

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha announced today the five incoming student-athletes who will join the Maverick hockey team for the 2009-2010 season. Forwards Terry Broadhurst, Brent Gwidt, Andrew McCabe and Brandon Richardson and goalie Fredrik Bergman all will play for new head coach #Dean Blais# when the Mavericks begin the season against the University of Lethbridge in an exhibition game on Oct. 5.
Broadhurst comes to UNO from the Sioux Falls Stampede where he led the team in scoring last season with 27 goals and 31 assists in 60 games. He also led the team in goals, was 12th in the United States Hockey League in scoring and ninth in goals. Broadhurst had two goals and three points in four playoff games. The native of Orland Park, Ill. finished his two-year career with 34 goals and 47 assists for 81 points in 116 games.
Gwidt won the Clark Cup Championship with the Indiana Ice of the USHL last season, beating the Fargo Force and then head coach Blais three games to one. In 60 games, he had 11 goals and 17 assists while accumulating 31 penalty minutes. He also had five more goals and 10 points in 13 playoff games. The native of Minocqua, Wis. was the team's captain and capped a three-year career with Indiana for whom he was also an alternate captain in 2006-2007. Gwidt was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the 6th round, 157th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
McCabe played three seasons for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League from 2006-2009. He had 17 goals and 30 assists in 57 games last season as the team's third-leading scorer. He also had four goals and nine points in seven playoff games. The Eau Claire, Wis. native finished his junior career with 47 goals and 75 assists.
Richardson teamed with Gwidt to win the Clark Cup with Indiana last season. In 55 games, he had 21 goals and 42 assists for 63 points, ranking him third in team scoring and eighth in the USHL. The native of San Clemente, Calif. also had eight goals and 16 points in ten playoffs games.
Bergman split the 2008-09 season between Des Moines (USHL) and Owatonna (NAHL). He appeared in ten games for the Buccaneers and then finished the regular season with Owatonna posting a 2.56 GAA and a .916 save percentage. Bergman, born in Stockholm, Sweden but now living in Vienna, Va., had a 2.51 GAA and .925 sv% during the playoffs for Owatonna.
