Preseason Wraps Up With Alumni Match Saturday

OMAHA, Neb. - Five former Maverick All-Americans will suit up and take the court at Sapp Fieldhouse once again as the UNO volleyball team hosts the UNO alumni in a preseason exhibition Saturday at 6 p.m. Prior to UNO's match, the alumni will break into two squads and play their own scrimmage at 5 p.m.
Overall, at least 18 former Mavericks are scheduled to compete in the matches. Included in the bunch are All-Americans Nikki Mastny (1998-02), Tanya Cate (1994-97), Carlie Christiansen (2004-07), Ruth (Evans) McCallaghan (1985-88) and Denise Otten (1992-95) and current assistant head coach Karen Povondra (1978-81).
This year's Maverick squad includes all seven starters from last year among the 10 returning letterwinners. Senior middle blocker Ellen Thommes earned second team all-MIAA last year while senior outside hitter Sara Kampschnieder and senior libero Kayla Jansen earned third team honors. Sophomore setter Emily Myers earned honorable mention last year.
The Mavericks 40th season of volleyball will begin August 28-29 with the UNO Showcase at Sapp Fieldhouse. They will host nine teams in the 18-match tournament played on two courts. UNO will take on Tarleton State at 10 a.m. Friday and then Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. On Saturday they play Dallas Baptist at 11:45 a.m. and then North Alabama at 6:30 p.m. to wrap up the event.
