The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (3-3-0, 2-0-0 MIAA) looks to expand upon its two-game winning streak as it wraps up its three-game homestand before hitting the road for a match.
The Mavs will host the Central Missouri Jennies (3-2-1, 2-0 MIAA) on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. UNO will be on the road Saturday, Sept. 19 for a noon match against the Missouri Southern Lions (2-4-0, 0-2-0 MIAA).
UNO Opens MIAA Action With Two Wins
The Mavericks opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action with a pair of wins over Missouri Western and Truman on their home field last week.
On Sept. 10, UNO scored three first-half goals and added another in the second to pick up a 4-2 win over the Griffons. Nicole Baier scored two goals, including the game winner. Jerica Kuncl scored on a penalty kick and Lauren Fox scored her first career goal in the win.
The Mavs continued their offensive surge against Truman on Sept. 12 with a 4-1 win. Baier scored two more goals, including another game winner. #Jessica Powers scored her third goal of the season and Melanie Petersen# tallied her first goal of the year in the win in front of a crowd of 277 at UNO Soccer Field.
The Series
It will mark the 11th meeting between UNO and UCM Thursday. The Mavs own a 9-1 all-time record against the Jennies. UCM's first-ever win over UNO came last season on its home field with a 3-1 win on Sept. 18, 2008. UNO has outscored UCM 33-6 in the past ten meetings.
The Mavs own a perfect 8-0 record against the Lions and have outscored them 29-3, including six shut outs.
Scouting The Jennies and Lions
Central Missouri enters this weeks matchup with a 3-2-1 overall record and are 2-0 in conference play. The Jennies picked up a pair of MIAA wins last week over Missouri Southern and Washburn. UCM blanked MSSU 3-0 on its home turf on Sept. 10 and dropped the Lady Blues 3-1 on Sept. 12. Senior UCM forward Melanie Hall leads the Jennies with three goals and has tallied 27 shots this season.
Missouri Southern opened MIAA action with losses to UCM and Southwest Baptist last week. The Lions lost a heartbreaker in overtime to SBU on Sept. 12. MSSU scored two late goals to send the game into overtime, but SBU scored in the first minute to seal the 4-3 win. The Lions will take on Northwest Missouri on Thursday, Sept. 17 before hosting UNO on Saturday.
The Coaches
Head coach #Don Klosterman# enters his 11th season at the helm of the Maverick women's soccer team. He has compiled a 173-42-7 (.795) overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to seven-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2008). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship. During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005).
Central Missouri is led by Lewis Theobald who enters his third season as head coach. Last season he guided the Jennies to their second MIAA championship and a 15-4-2 record. He was named the NSCAA/Adidas South-Central Regional “Coach of the Year” for his accomplishments.
Missouri Southern is coached by Trevor Wachsman who is in his seventh year. The Lions finished their 2008 season with a 6-12-1 record and went 4-11-1 in MIAA play under Wachsman.
Baier Continues Impressive Play
Redshirt freshman forward #Nicole Baier# continued her red-hot play last week. She scored two goals and had an assist in both wins over Missouri Western and Truman, including what proved to be the game-winner in each match.
Baier was named MIAA offensive player of the week for the second-consecutive week for her performance.
She leads UNO and the MIAA in goals (7), assists (4) and points (18). It's the best start through the first six games of the season by a UNO player since Beth McGill netted eight goals and had three assists (19 points) in the first six matches in 2006.
Kuncl Perfect On Penalty Kicks
Sophomore forward #Jerica Kuncl# has scored two goals this season, both being via penalty kick. She is a perfect 2-2 on penalty kick attempts. With only six games played this season Kuncl has tied the mark that only four other Mavericks have reached.
Stephanie Kruse did it in 2002. Beth McGill and Brandie Beale both scored two in 2005. Beale repeated her two-goal mark in 2006. McGill is UNO's all-time penalty kick goal leader with four in 2004.
Fox's First
Junior goalkeeper #Lauren Fox# made the most out of a rare opportunity in last Thursday's game against Missouri Western. Fox started the second-half in net and logged 24:05 minutes before being inserted into the offensive lineup for the Mavs.
In the 77th minute, she took a Nicole Baier pass and blasted it by MWSU goalie Jenna Weis for her first goal of her UNO career.
On Sept. 12 against Truman, Fox started in net for the first time this year and played all 90 minutes en route to her first win of the year. She allowed one goal and made seven saves.
What's On Tap?
The Mavericks will play just one match next week when they travel to Kirksville, Mo., to face Truman on Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at the Truman Soccer Pitch.
