Parking Information For Wednesday Volleyball Matches
The 18th-ranked Mavericks (13-3) will look to stay perfect at 3-0 in the MIAA as they take their seven-match overall winning streak into three contests this week.
Wednesday they will host No. 6 Washburn (15-0, 3-0 MIAA) at Sapp Fieldhouse and Friday they will travel to Fort Hays State (4-12, 1-3 MIAA) for a 7 p.m. match. They will wrap up the week at third-ranked Emporia State (13-0, 3-0 MIAA) Saturday at 4 p.m.
Nebraska-Omaha opened its first week of conference play with three wins, including a five-set victory over then-No. 22 Pittsbursg State. The Mavericks have played five top-25 teams this year and in a span of four days this week they will play two teams in the top 6 in the nation.
Shires Earns Major Milestone With 400th Win
The Mavericks cruised to three easy set victories over Southwest Baptist last Saturday at Sapp Fieldhouse to give head coach Rose Shires her 400th career win. The 20-year UNO coach improved her record to 400-218. Shires, already UNO's career wins leader, became the 21st active coach in NCAA II to win 400 matches and she is already the winningest active coach in the MIAA.
Thommes Has Another Big Week After Joining 1,000 Kill Club
One week after joining UNO's 1,000 kill club, senior middle blocker Ellen Thommes hit over .500 and reached double figure kills in three MIAA matches last week. She ended the 3-0 week for UNO with 4.17 kills per set, 4.96 points and a .560 attack percentage.
She had 20 kills and hit .567 at Missouri Southern on Wednesday and in a five-set match with Pittsburg State she had 19 kills and hit .576. She kept up the intensity in a three-set sweep over Southwest Baptist with 11 kills and a .524 hitting percentage. Thommes also averaged 0.92 blocks per set.
Thommes leads the MIAA hitting .446 this year and she's fourth with 4.19 points per set.
Myers Second in the MIAA in Assists
Sophomore setter Emily Myers is second in the MIAA with 11.20 assists per set. Last week she averaged 11.92 assists and she had 50-plus assist performances at Missouri Southern and against Pittsburg State. She also averaged 2.00 digs per set with 13 against PSU for a double-double.
Mavericks Move Up Again In Top 25 Poll
The Mavericks continued their climb in the national ranking with a No. 18 spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 poll. Nebraska-Omaha debuted at No. 23 two weeks ago and moved to 20th last week. UNO is one of six MIAA teams in the top 25 and overall, eight of UNO's 2009 opponents are in the ranking.
About This Week's Opponents
UNO, Washburn and Emporia State are all in the top three in four of the seven MIAA team statistical categories. The three are undefeated in the conference and ranked in the top-25 and UNO will face the two this week. ESU is No. 1 in hitting (.281), assists (13.58 per set) and kills (14.67/set) while Washburn in No. 1 in opponent hitting percentage, keeping its opponents to a .088 attack.
ESU and WU are both undefeated overall while Fort Hays State is 4-12 overall and 1-3 in the league. The Tigers have lost seven of eight but haven't been swept since September 11. They took nationally-ranked Truman and Pittsburg State to four sets last week.

The Mavericks will have another week of three MIAA matches next week. They travel to Northwest Missouri State Wednesday, October 7, and then return home on Friday, October 9, to host Missouri Western State. On Saturday, October 10, they host Truman.
