NFCA Preseason Top 25
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Mavericks will start the 2010 season ranked higher than where they finished last year as they earned a No. 12 ranking in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll. Nebraska-Omaha finished last year with a 45-17 record and a No. 24 ranking in the final poll.
The Mavericks will return all but one starter, including the experience of six seniors and four juniors. Led by their talented pitching staff, head coach Jeanne Scarpello, 17 wins away from becoming the school's winningest coach, will begin her 11th year at UNO next weekend in three doubleheaders in Colorado.
The Mavericks will play at Metro State on February 5 and then at Colorado Mines on February 6. They will wrap up their season-opening weekend February 7 at Regis.
Senior pitcher Melissa Negrete will start the year just one strikeout shy of becoming the seventh pitcher in UNO history to record 300 strikeouts.
UNO was one of two MIAA teams in the ranking. Missouri Western was picked No. 8 after not being ranked at the end of last year. Among other 2010 opponents, Metro State is No. 16, Wayne State (Neb.) is 21st and West Texas A&M is 22nd.
