Mavericks Grab WCHA Hardware in First Week

MADISON, Wis. - Two members of the UNO hockey team picked up weekly awards from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association today. Goaltender #John Faulkner was named the Red Baron WCHA Defensive Player of the Week while forward Matt White# was the co-winner of the Red Baron WCHA Rookie of the Week award.
Faulkner earned the award for backstopping the Mavericks to a pair of victories over Clarkson and 2010 national semi-finalist RIT in the Mutual of Omaha Stampede last weekend. A 6-1, 207-pounder from Sarnia, Ont., Faulkner earned both UNO wins in goal on Oct. 8-9, posting a 1.50 goals-against average and a .942 saves percentage over 119:58 of work. He was also named to the Stampede all-tournament team for the second straight year.
Faulkner earned his first collegiate shutout last Friday night, stopping all 26 shots on goal in Nebraska Omaha's 8-0 win over Clarkson. Last Saturday, he stopped 23 of 26 shots on goal against No. 18 RIT to give the Mavericks a 5-3 win and the tourney title. He also helped UNO's penalty-killers go 8-for-8 overall.
White shared the Rookie of the Week award with Michigan Tech's Milos Gordic. A 5-10, 185-pounder right winger from Whittier, Calif., White produced four points, including two goals, in UNO's wins over Clarkson and RIT. He had two goals an an assist vs Clarkson and one assist vs RIT, fired nine shots on goal overall, and earned a +4 rating.
The Mavericks begin WCHA play when they visit Minnesota for games on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15 and 16. Game time is 7:07 p.m. each night from Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.
