The UNO women's basketball team takes to the road for the first time this season on Thursday, Nov. 18, as the Mavs visit the Missouri S&T Lady Miners. The game will be carried live on MavRadio, KVNO HD2 with Robert Ford calling the action from the Gale Bullman Multipurpose Building in Rolla, Mo., at 5:30 p.m. Fans can also follow Live Stats here.
The Mavericks (1-0) opened their season last Friday with a 76-46 triumph over York College. The Lady Miners (2-0) have earned wins over Nebraska-Kearney (70-62) and Fontbonne (65-52) so far this season. This will be the first ever meeting between the schools.
Scouting the Competition: Missouri S&T Lady Miners
Missouri S&T opened its season with two comfortable wins to move to 2-0. The Lady Miners defeated Nebraska-Kearney 70-62 in their season opener at home and then ran away from Fontbonne 65-52 the following day. Junior guard Courtney Kemp leads the Lady Miners in scoring at 10 points per game. Kemp started all 28 games for the Lady Miners in 2009-10. Junior forward Julie Meyer leads Missouri S&T on the boards, averaging 11.5 rebounds per game.
The Lady Miners have started slow in each of their games, trailing at the half in both, but they are outscoring opponents 75-50 in the second half. The Lady Miners have eight letterwinners back from their 14-14 team in 2009-10.
Noting the Mavs
--Jamie Nash recorded a career-high eight steals in the Mavs' season opening win over York College. Her 3.2 career steals per game average ranks second in school history.
--The Mavs' 22 steals against York tied for second in school history. The most recorded was 30 against BYU on Dec. 29, 2007.
--The 76 field goals attempted by the Mavs against York ranked as the fourth highest total in school history.
--UNO is looking to start a season 2-0 for the first time since 2007.

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season against York College on Nov. 12, defeating the Panthers 76-46 at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 1-0 (0-0 MIAA) on the year, while York dropped to 0-1.
Sophomore guard Jamie Nash led Nebraska-Omaha with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, along with a perfect 5-for-5 night from the free throw line. Nash added a career-high eight steals with six rebounds and an assist. Sophomore guards Sara Reeves and Jessica Zaruba joined Nash in double figures. Reeves notched 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting, while adding a team-leading eight boards, four steals and two assists, and Zaruba contributed 11 points on a 5-for-7 night from the floor.
Defensively, sophomore guard Paige Frauendorfer and junior forward Heather Pohl each pulled down seven rebounds and chipped in nine points and a block apiece, with Frauendorfer swiping four steals and adding two assists. True freshman guard Amanda Woodring also had a team-high three blocks.
Freshmen Woodring, Jordan Spencer and Stacia Gebers all made their collegiate debuts for the Mavericks, with Gebers totaling eight points off the bench, including a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the line.
UNO won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 48-41. The Mavs also capitalized on York's 36 turnovers to score 32 points, while also dominating inside, putting up 38 points in the paint to the Panthers' 20.
The Panthers used an early 17-5 run to take a 10-point advantage. But the Mavs then used their own 13-3 scoring run to retake the lead, with Pohl dropping in her first shot in the paint to make it 21-20. UNO never forfeited its edge from that point on.
Fresh Faces
Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer has eight newcomers on her young roster for 2010-11, highlighted by transfers in sophomore guard Carly Cator (San Francisco State), junior forwards Jasamine Reeves (Lon Morris JC) and Lauren Andrews (Labette CC). Five freshmen will also vie for playing time this season: guards Natasha Mueller (Seward), Aisle Quinlan (Des Moines Dowling Catholic) and Amanda Woodring (Millard West) and forwards Stacia Gebers (Superior) and Jordan Spencer (Millard West).
Stealing the Spotlight
Sophomore guard Jamie Nash ranked 15th nationally in steals per game in her freshman campaign in 2009-10, averaging 3.0 steals per contest. Nash was the highest-ranked MIAA player within the final NCAA Division II statistics report released in March, and her performance for the year earned her a spot on the conference's all-defensive team.In the season opener against York, Nash recorded a career-high eight steals.
Mavs Chosen Eighth in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll
Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's 2010-11 preseason polls, the league office announced in October. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches and media members.
The Mavericks earned 43 points in the coaches poll and 66 in the media list. The 12 conference coaches selected Washburn as their preseason favorite, while media voters had the Lady Blues and defending national champion Emporia State tied for their top choice.
UNO Named to 2009-10 WBCA Academic Top 25
The 2009-10 UNO women's basketball team earned a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the WBCA announced in July. The list recognizes schools throughout the nation that carry the best overall team grade-point averages for the entire season.
The Mavs rounded out all NCAA Division II institutions at 25th, posting a team GPA of 3.403. It marked the first time since 2006-07 that UNO was included on the WBCA Academic Top 25.
Next Up for the Mavs...
UNO will play at Nebraska on Friday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m., the day after Thanksgiving. The Mavs are 11-17 all-time against the Huskers. The last meeting, though, was Dec. 20, 1986, when the Huskers beat the Mavs 76-74.
