UNO at Nebraska Game Notes
The UNO women's basketball team will celebrate the Thanksgiving weekend with back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, including one against likely its toughest opponent of the year. On Friday, Nov. 26, the Mavericks travel to take on the No. 20 Nebraska Cornhuskers in a rare in-state matchup at 11:05 a.m., at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The Mavs (2-0) haven't faced the Huskers since 1986, when UNO beat NU, 76-74. The Huskers, coming off a 32-2 season and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament last year, are off to another hot start at 4-0.
On Saturday, UNO returns home, as the Calumet College of Saint Joseph (Ind.) Crimson Wave visit the Sapp Fieldhouse. Tip-off for that game is set for 1:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on KVNO 90.7 FM.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS
Nebraska (4-0) has won 35 consecutive regular season games, dating back to the end of the 2008-09 regular season. The Huskers return two starters from last year's Sweet 16 team in Dominique Kelley and Lindsey Moore. Kelley leads the Huskers in scoring at 19.0 points per game, while Moore is second at 15.3 points per game. Center Catheryn Redmon is pulling down 8.3 rebounds per game. True freshman forward Jordan Hooper averages 15.0 points per game.
The Huskers are shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 41.0 percent from 3-point range. Those numbers are up from last year's 32-2 team (46.1 percent; 34.0 percent).
Nebraska opened with a 95-38 demolition of Vermont, then beat Miami at home, 99-85. The Huskers also scraped by St. Mary's at home, 64-63. On Tuesday, NU went on the road for the first time this season and defeated Washington State, 87-79.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: CALEMUT COLLEGE OF ST. JOSEPH CRIMSON WAVE
The Crimson Wave (3-5) are an experienced bunch, starting five seniors in the majority of their games this season. Guard Lisa Upshaw leads CCSJ in scoring at 12.4 points per game. Upshaw was a CCAC Division Two First-Team selection in 2009. She was in the top five in the conference in scoring at 13.7 points per game. Forward Whitney Bonham worked her way into the starting lineup this season and is averaging 9.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Bonham was the CCAC Division Two Player of the Week last week after averaging 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
Fourth-year coach Cristina Schmidt has the Crimson Wave on an upward trend. In her first two seasons, CCSJ had a combined record of 7-54. Last season, the Crimson Wave went 15-17, including a 5-5 record in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (Division II), which tied for second place in the standings. Both the 15 wins and the tie for second in the conference were school records.
CCSJ started the season 0-5, but has won three straight games.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MAVS: UNO 61, MISSOURI S&T 52
ROLLA, Mo. - Heather Pohl scored a career-high 24 points and the UNO women's basketball team defeated the Missouri S&T Lady Miners, 61-52, Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Gale Bullman Multipurpose Building.
The Mavs improved to 2-0 to start the season, thanks to a strong second half performance over the previously unbeaten Lady Miners. UNO used a key 9-0 run midway through the second half to turn a 41-41 game into a 50-41 lead with 7:22 to play, a lead the Mavs wouldn't relinquish.
Pohl shot 8-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. The Millard West graduate was also a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line and grabbed five rebounds.
Tied 25-25 at halftime, Nebraska-Omaha opened the second half with a 13-7 spurt to take a 38-32 lead. Missouri S&T responded with a 9-3 run of its own to even the game up at 41-41, setting the stage for the Mavs' decisive run.
Pohl started it off with a jumper, then made a steal and missed a 3-pointer, but Carly Cator grabbed the offensive rebound and put a layup back in to make it 45-41. Freshman Amanda Woodring then hit two free throws, and Cator hit a 3-pointer to put UNO ahead 50-41 with 7:22 left.
The Lady Miners didn't back off though, pulling back to within three points at 52-49, thanks to six points by Julie Meyer in a 1:31 span. However, the Mavs converted 5-of-6 free throws in the last five minutes to claim the win and start 2-0 for the first time since 2007.
Lauren Andrews scored nine points for the Mavs, while Jessica Zaruba and Jamie Nash each chipped in seven. Zaruba led the Mavs with six rebounds.
MAKING THEM PAY
UNO is averaging 31 points off turnovers per game, while opponents are averaging 9.5 points off turnovers per game. The Mavs forced 36 and 19 turnovers, respectively, against York and Missouri S&T.
FRESH FACES
Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer has eight newcomers on her young roster for 2010-11, highlighted by transfers in sophomore guard Carly Cator (San Francisco State), junior forwards Jasamine Reeves (Lon Morris JC) and Lauren Andrews (Labette CC). Three freshmen are competing for playing time this season: guard Amanda Woodring (Millard West) and forwards Stacia Gebers (Superior) and Jordan Spencer (Millard West). Two freshmen, guards Natasha Mueller (Seward) and Aisle Quinlan (Des Moines Dowling Catholic), are redshirting.
STEALING THE SPOTLIGHT
Sophomore guard Jamie Nash ranked 15th nationally in steals per game in her freshman campaign in 2009-10, averaging 3.0 steals per contest. Nash was the highest-ranked MIAA player within the final NCAA Division II statistics report released in March, and her performance for the year earned her a spot on the conference's all-defensive team. In the season opener against York, Nash recorded a career-high eight steals.
YOUNG EXPERIENCE DEFINES MAVERICKS IN 2010-11
UNO's returning squad may be primarily young this year, but the group gained considerable experience in the 2009-10 campaign. Sophomore guard Jamie Nash led the team in total assists and steals as a freshman, and junior guard Heather Pohl was one of two Mavericks to average in double-figure scoring with 10.2 points per game.
MAVS CHOSEN EIGHTH IN MIAA PRESEASON COACHES POLL
Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's 2010-11 preseason polls, the league office announced in October. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches and media members.
The Mavericks earned 43 points in the coaches poll and 66 in the media list. The 12 conference coaches selected Washburn as their preseason favorite, while media voters had the Lady Blues and defending national champion Emporia State tied for their top choice.
UNO NAMED TO 2009-10 WBCA ACADEMIC TOP 25
The 2009-10 UNO women's basketball team earned a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the WBCA announced in July. The list recognizes schools throughout the nation that carry the best overall team grade-point averages for the entire season.
The Mavs rounded out all NCAA Division II institutions at 25th, posting a team GPA of 3.403. It marked the first time since 2006-07 that UNO was included on the WBCA Academic Top 25.
