UNO at Washburn, Fort Hays State Game Notes
The UNO women's basketball team opens MIAA Conference play this week with two road games. On Wednesday, the Mavs (3-1) will take on the No. 4 Washburn Lady Blues. Washburn, the defending MIAA regular season and conference tournament champion, enters the game with a 4-0 record. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m., at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan. On Friday, UNO travels to Hays, Kan., to take on the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers (3-1) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. UNO was 0-2 against Washburn last season and 1-1 against Fort Hays State. In their last game at Washburn on Jan. 23, 2010, the Mavericks lost, 63-55. At Fort Hays State on Jan. 27, 2010, UNO lost, 76-66. UNO is 1-5 all-time against Washburn and 1-3 all-time against Fort Hays State.
Scouting the Competition: Washburn Lady Blues
The No. 4 Washburn Lady Blues are coming off an award-winning 27-4 (17-3 MIAA) season that saw the Lady Blues win both the MIAA regular season and conference tournament titles. The Lady Blues lost all five starters from that team, but still start plenty of experience. Of the Lady Blues' starting five, one is a senior, three are juniors, and one is a sophomore. Three players played in all 31 games last season, one played in 30, and the other is a talented JUCO recruit, Megan Lassley.
Junior center Cassie Lombardino leads Washburn in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game. Lombardino, at 6-3, is a difficult matchup for opponents, as she has hit 63.6 percent of her shots from the field, and is also pulling down 6.5 rebounds per game. Sophomore Laura Kinderknecht is averaging 12.5 points per game and is 11-of-27 from 3-point range (40.7 percent). The leading returning scorer from last year, Stevi Schultz, is the third Lady Blue averaging double-figures, scoring 10.3 points per game and grabbing a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game. Lassley, in her first year with Washburn after transferring from Wichita South Seward County CC, is putting up 9.3 points and 3.0 assists per game. Alyssa Mullen is the lone senior starter. She averages 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Off the bench, seven Washburn players average more than seven minutes per game. The Lady Blues are off to a 4-0 start, with their closest margin of victory being 12 points over Drury. Washburn is coming off a 65-51 win over Lake Superior State on Nov. 27.
Scouting the Competition: Fort Hays State Lady Tigers
Fort Hays State returns two part-time starters from last year's 15-13 (8-12 MIAA) team. Shelby Hillman started 14 games for the Lady Tigers last year and is averaging 6.5 points per game in four starts this season. Kara McFarland, who started 17 games in 2009-10, has only started one game this season, but is averaging 9.5 points per game.
The Lady Tigers' top four scoring leaders all come off the bench. Junior guard Rhys Pihl, who has come off the bench in every game this season, leads the Lady Tigers in scoring at 11.5 points per game entering the week of Nov. 29. Pihl is a transfer from Bethany College. First-year junior point guard Crista Bechard is averaging 7.3 points and 4.0 assists per game to just 1.8 turnovers per game in a team-high 27.5 minutes of action.
Fort Hays State (3-1) opened with wins over Doane, Tabor College and Nebraska-Kearnery by an average margin of 25 points. The Lady Tigers fell for the first time to Newman, 66-52, on Nov. 23. Fort Hays State squares off against Lincoln on Wednesday, Dec. 1, before welcoming the Mavs on Friday.
Last Time Out for the Mavs: UNO 69, Calumet College of Saint Joseph 38
OMAHA, Neb. - Point guard Jamie Nash scored 13 points and made a career-high 11 steals, and the UNO Mavericks defeated Calumet College of Saint Joseph, 69-38, on Saturday at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavs improved to 3-1 on the year and snapped the three-game winning streak of the Crimson Wave, who fell to 3-6.
Nash's 11 steals ranked second in school history behind 12 recorded by Linda Schabloske on Jan. 30, 1993. Nash, who also finished with a game-high five assists, is averaging 6.5 steals per game.
Nebraska-Omaha jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game and never looked back. Heather Pohl opened the game for the Mavs by hitting three straight 3-pointers. The Omaha native led all scorers with 17 points.
The Mavs forced the Crimson Wave into 33 turnovers and turned those into a 26-9 advantage in points off turnovers. UNO matched its season high of 18 offensive rebounds and converted 23 second-chance points while allowing only eight.
Sara Reeves chipped in eight points and six rebounds for the Mavs off the bench, as 12 Mavs finished with double-digit minutes. Paige Frauendorfer grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Stealing the Spotlight
Sophomore guard Jamie Nash ranked 15th nationally in steals per game in her freshman campaign in 2009-10, averaging 3.0 steals per contest. Nash was the highest-ranked MIAA player within the final NCAA Division II statistics report released in March, and her performance for the year earned her a spot on the conference's all-defensive team. This season, Nash recorded a career-high 11 steals in a 69-38 win over Calumet College on Nov. 27. Nash earned the first double-double of her career, as she also scored 13 points in the victory. Nash's 11 steals was one short of the school-record 12 steals, set by Linda Schabloske on Jan. 30, 1993.

Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer has eight newcomers on her young roster for 2010-11, highlighted by transfers in sophomore guard Carly Cator (San Francisco State), junior forwards Jasamine Reeves (Lon Morris JC) and Lauren Andrews (Labette CC). Three freshmen are competing for playing time this season: guard Amanda Woodring (Millard West) and forwards Stacia Gebers (Superior) and Jordan Spencer (Millard West). Two freshmen, guards Natasha Mueller (Seward) and Aisle Quinlan (Des Moines Dowling Catholic), are redshirting.

UNO's returning squad may be primarily young this year, but the group gained considerable experience in the 2009-10 campaign. Sophomore guard Jamie Nash led the team in total assists and steals as a freshman, and junior guard Heather Pohl was one of two Mavericks to average in double-figure scoring with 10.2 points per game.

Mavs Chosen Eighth in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll
Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's 2010-11 preseason polls, the league office announced in October. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches and media members.
The Mavericks earned 43 points in the coaches poll and 66 in the media list. The 12 conference coaches selected Washburn as their preseason favorite, while media voters had the Lady Blues and defending national champion Emporia State tied for their top choice.
UNO Named to 2009-10 WBCA Academic Top 25
The 2009-10 UNO women's basketball team earned a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the WBCA announced in July. The list recognizes schools throughout the nation that carry the best overall team grade-point averages for the entire season.
The Mavs rounded out all NCAA Division II institutions at 25th, posting a team GPA of 3.403. It marked the first time since 2006-07 that UNO was included on the WBCA Academic Top 25.
