The UNO women's basketball team plays its last game before Christmas break when the Lincoln Blue Tigers visit the Sapp Fieldhouse for an MIAA contest at 5:30 p.m., on Saturday night.
Both teams will be in search of their first conference wins. UNO is 3-5 overall and 0-4 in league play. The Mavs had the week off following last Saturday's 90-77 loss to Northwest Missouri State. The Blue Tigers enter with a 1-7 overall record and are 0-4 against MIAA competition after a 58-50 loss to Central Missouri on Wednesday.
Lincoln is back in the MIAA for the first time since 1999. The Blue Tigers have lost seven games in a row. Lincoln went 12-15 in 2009-10 with a 6-8 record in the Heartland Conference.
The Mavs and Blue Tigers have only met once before, in a non-conference game back on Nov. 23, 2007. UNO won the game, 75-55.

After Saturday's game, the Mavericks have two weeks off before returning to action at Missouri Western on Sunday, Jan 2.

UNO is looking to break its four-game conference losing streak to start its MIAA schedule. The combined conference record of the Mavs' first four MIAA opponents is 12-4, and UNO played three of those games on the road. The Mavs' next five games come against MIAA teams with a combined conference record of 8-12, and with three of those games at home, UNO has a chance to climb the standings.
Heather Pohl is putting up 14.4 points per game to lead the Mavs and rank seventh in the MIAA in scoring. The junior from Millard West is connecting on 36.7 percent from behind the 3-point line, the eighth-best percentage in the MIAA. Jamie Nash is averaging 12.3 points per game and leads the conference with 4.5 steals per game.
FINDING A SWEET SPOT
UNO is tied for first in the league in free throw percentage, as the Mavs have connected on 96-of-128 attempts for a 75.0-percent clip. That solid shooting hasn't necessarily translated to the field though, as UNO ranks 11th in the 12-team MIAA in field goal percentage at 36.4 percent.
OPPONENTS ON FIRE
In conference play, the Mavs have been struck by opponents shooting lights out from behind the arc. UNO's conference opponents are shooting 43.3 percent from 3-point range against the Mavs, far and away the best percentage against any team in the MIAA. The next closest is 34.0 percent against Missouri Western.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: LINCOLN BLUE TIGERS
Lincoln is in its first season back in the MIAA after forfeiting its membership in 1999 because it couldn't field a football team in time for the 2000-01 season.
Lincoln opened the 2010-11 season on a high note, defeating Rockhurst in overtime, 59-57, on Nov. 12. Since then, the Blue Tigers have dropped their last seven games, six by double digits. Lincoln lost to Central Missouri, 58-50, on Wednesday night to drop to 0-4 in league play, but Lincoln did lead at halftime. The Mavs and Blue Tigers have one common opponent, as both played at Fort Hays State earlier this month. Fort Hays State beat Lincoln, 62-39 on Dec. 1, and then beat UNO, 76-70, two days later.
The Blue Tigers are led by junior forward Vivian Essuon, who is a first-year JUCO transfer. Essuon averages 12.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game to lead Lincoln. Against Southwest Baptist on Dec. 4, Essuon had 12 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for her second career double-double. Her first came on Nov. 20 against Illinois-Springfield, when she scored 19 points and grabbed 12 boards. Senior guard Cherakie Barrett is the top returning veteran, averaging 9.2 points per game. Freshman guard Jackeya Mitchell has started every game for the Blue Tigers and is averaging 7.6 points per game in 36.4 minutes per game.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE MAVS: NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE 90, UNO 77
OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO women's basketball team dropped a 90-77 loss to Northwest Missouri State last Saturday night at Sapp Fieldhouse. With the defeat, UNO dropped to 3-5 (0-4 MIAA), while NWMSU improved to 6-2 (2-2 MIAA).
The Mavericks were led by four players scoring in double figures – Heather Pohl (16), Jamie Nash (15), Jessica Zaruba (14) and Paige Frauendorfer (13). Pohl and Jordan Spencer led the way on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds apiece, while Nash also dished out seven assists.
The Bearcats were topped by Abby Henry, who finished with 33 points on 11-for-20 shooting from the field.
Stealing the Spotlight
Sophomore guard Jamie Nash ranked 15th nationally in steals per game in her freshman campaign in 2009-10, averaging 3.0 steals per contest. Nash was the highest-ranked MIAA player within the final NCAA Division II statistics report released in March, and her performance for the year earned her a spot on the conference's all-defensive team. This season, Nash recorded a career-high 11 steals in a 69-38 win over Calumet College on Nov. 27. Nash earned the first double-double of her career, as she also scored 13 points in the victory. Nash's 11 steals was one short of the school-record 12 steals, set by Linda Schabloske on Jan. 30, 1993.
Fresh Faces
Head Coach Patty Patton Shearer has eight newcomers on her young roster for 2010-11, highlighted by transfers in sophomore guard Carly Cator (San Francisco State), junior forwards Jasamine Reeves (Lon Morris JC) and Lauren Andrews (Labette CC). Three freshmen are competing for playing time this season: guard Amanda Woodring (Millard West) and forwards Stacia Gebers (Superior) and Jordan Spencer (Millard West). Two freshmen, guards Natasha Mueller (Seward) and Aisle Quinlan (Des Moines Dowling Catholic), are redshirting.
Young Experience Defines Mavericks in 2010-11
UNO's returning squad may be primarily young this year, but the group gained considerable experience in the 2009-10 campaign. Sophomore guard Jamie Nash led the team in total assists and steals as a freshman, and junior guard Heather Pohl was one of two Mavericks to average in double-figure scoring with 10.2 points per game.

Mavs Chosen Eighth in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll
Nebraska-Omaha was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's 2010-11 preseason polls, the league office announced in October. The preseason conference standings are chosen in a survey of MIAA head coaches and media members.
The Mavericks earned 43 points in the coaches poll and 66 in the media list. The 12 conference coaches selected Washburn as their preseason favorite, while media voters had the Lady Blues and defending national champion Emporia State tied for their top choice.
UNO Named to 2009-10 WBCA Academic Top 25
The 2009-10 UNO women's basketball team earned a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the WBCA announced in July. The list recognizes schools throughout the nation that carry the best overall team grade-point averages for the entire season.
The Mavs rounded out all NCAA Division II institutions at 25th, posting a team GPA of 3.403. It marked the first time since 2006-07 that UNO was included on the WBCA Academic Top 25.
